Our client, an established Freight and Logistics company, are seeking a Shipping Manager for their operations based out of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

This role will be responsible for leading the operations, planning, commercial and HR functions for the Shipping Department. You will be required to deliver excellence in sales and customer service both internally and externally whilst focusing on key deliverable areas such as safety, quality, delivery, cost and innovation.

Responsibilites for this exciting role include:

Port Operations

  • Working closely with the operations team, personally boarding each agency vessel upon arrival to visit the ship's Master together with the port agent.
  • Maintain close hands-on involvement with the agency team/PNG Ports/Stevedore as to vessels operation, progress & Estimated Time of Departure.
  • Involvement in port operational matters for vessels, liaising with the port officials, stevedores, the vessel and the principals as to the vessel's program of loading and unloading cargo.

Sales and Customer Service

  • Coordinate sales activities of staff/branch, personally visit key accounts. Follow up leads to principal's satisfaction with a minimum of 6 face-to-face calls per week.
  • Export: Personally take charge of export shipments, developing key account contacts and support for the principals and the company.
  • Personal involvement in dealing with shipping principals and customers for all commercial issues.
  • Oversee the existing team's performance, ensuring timely follow-on day-to-day commercial issues and enquiries. Constantly endeavour to lift the performance of the team.

Documentation

  • Oversee the import documentation staff, ensuring work flow and document readiness is on time and better than industry standards.
  • Oversee the export documentation team, ensuring bills of lading, cargo and freight manifests are completed promptly, on-time and error-free.

Other

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day transport operations of the Port Moresby shipping department.
  • Manage and mentor direct reports.
  • Ensure safety and compliance for the operations.
  • Own the Profit & Loss (P&L) for the operation and be responsible for controlling department debtors.
  • Liaise with customers and the principal daily.
  • Liaise regularly with other departments.
  • Enforce Company Rules and Policies 100% of the time.
  • Ensure contractual KPIs of the contracts you oversee are met and where
    possible exceeded.
  • Other duties as directed from time-to-time.

The successful applicant would be expected to demonstrate the following skills, qualifications and experience:

  • Sound industry knowledge and communication skills to secure cargo nominations, replying to and relaying information together with problem solving.
  • Demonstrated industry experience in the shipping and freight-forwarding industry.
  • 5 years in a management role with advanced interpersonal skills - Oral and Written communication.
  • Have a strong commitment to health, safety & leadership.
  • Strong planning and organizing skills.

Experience working with Maersk Line would be useful, as would experience in the freight/shipping industry, including shipping line container yards.

Preference will be given to PNG citizens for this role, with overseas applicants also considered.
