Staff Engineer

 

Location:  Birmingham, AL

 

Position Summary:

Staff Engineers report directly to their Regional Engineering Director and to the Vice-President for Engineering and perform duties of a technical and often complex nature. These duties include determining the code compliance of building products, materials and methods; developing acceptance criteria; and writing evaluation reports.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate test reports, calculations, and other technical data submitted by evaluation-report applicants.
  • Develop technical criteria for the acceptance of innovative building products, materials and methods that are alternatives to what may be specified in the building code.
  • Prepare correspondence and draft reports regarding the code compliance of products.
  • Provide expert assistance to building departments throughout the United States.
  • Participate in evaluation committee hearings.
  • Represent company on matters of interest at meetings of technical bodies and at meetings with representatives of government and industry.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the building construction field.
  • Travel as necessary to attend conferences, meetings, speaking engagements, and other functions.
  • Perform other tasks as may be directed by the office Engineering Manager/Director or the Vice-President for Engineering.

 

Essential Skills and Education / Experience:

  • University degree in engineering.
  • Familiarity with roofing materials.
  • A license to practice engineering or equivalent experience as determined by company.
  • At least three years of experience in the construction industry, building code development or enforcement, or product testing; or equivalent experience as determined by company.
  • Familiarity with building codes and with modern design and construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver professional services.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.

 

Preferred indications of competence to fill the position:

  • Basic knowledge of materials, tools and methods used in construction.
  • Ability to effectively use college-level algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Professional registration as an engineer or architect.
  • At least four years of experience in an engineering-related field.
  • Knowledge of the codes and of design standards.
  • Knowledge of test standards.
  • Knowledge of quality control processes for the manufacture of building products.
  • Membership in relevant technical organizations such as ASTM, ACI, and UL.
