Subsidy Officer

 Job Description:

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Northampton to assist with the appointment of a Subsidy Officer, on a 3-month contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £22.34 - £31.00 per hour

Summary:

The Subsidy Officer will play a key role in ensuring Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims are assessed accurately, correctly paid, and compliant with relevant legislation. The post holder will support the completion of annual Housing Benefit subsidy claims, work closely with auditors, identify areas for subsidy improvement, and contribute to staff development through quality assurance and subsidy checking activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Review benefit claims to ensure accurate and timely assessment of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims, including complex cases such as homeless applicants, hostel residents, self-employed individuals, students, and persons from abroad.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Housing Benefit and Council Tax legislation, case law, policies, procedures, and software developments.
  • Assist in the preparation, completion, submission, and external audit verification of annual Housing Benefit subsidy claims and returns.
  • Work collaboratively with auditors and complete supporting workbooks and documentation.
  • Support the Training and Resilience Team in delivering subsidy awareness training and identifying areas for performance improvement.
  • Provide feedback to Team Leaders and training staff regarding audit findings and development needs within the Benefits Team.

Qualification:

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, including Maths and English.

Essentials:

  • Experience working within a Revenues and Benefits environment.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex legislation.
  • Strong ICT skills, including experience using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, and partners.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to gather, interpret, and assess information accurately.
