 Job Description:

We are working closely with a local authority in Lewisham to assist with the appointment of a Principal Design and Conservation , on a 3-months contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £29.33- £38.70 per hour

Summary:

The Principal Design and Conservation Officer is responsible to lead the provision of specialist design, conservation, and heritage advice across Lewisham Council's Planning Service.  The role involves leading conservation programmes, managing heritage strategies, mentoring junior officers, and working collaboratively with internal teams, developers, Historic England, and the wider community to achieve high-quality, sustainable development.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of specialist design and conservation advice for complex planning applications, regeneration schemes, and strategic development projects.
  • Manage and deliver conservation projects, including Conservation Area Appraisals, Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs), Article 4 Directions, and the Borough's Heritage Strategy.
  • Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and policy advice for senior management, Planning Committees, Cabinet, Members, and other decision-making bodies.
  • Provide technical leadership, supervision, mentoring, and line management for Design and Conservation Officers and other team members.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Town Planning, Historic Building Conservation, Architecture, or a closely related discipline.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body such as the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), or Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Essentials:

  • Significant experience providing specialist conservation and heritage advice within a local authority or planning environment.
  • Experience managing complex planning applications, listed building applications, and heritage-related development proposals.
  • Experience managing conservation projects, funding applications, and consultant commissions.
