Environmental Health Officer

 Job Description:

We are working closely with local authority in Bromley to assist with the appointment of an Environmental Health Officer, on a 6.5-months contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £27.14- £35.83 per hour

Summary:

The Environmental Health Officer is responsible for delivering a comprehensive environmental health service that protects public health, promotes environmental quality, and ensures compliance with environmental health legislation across the London Borough of Bromley. The postholder undertakes inspections, investigations, enforcement activities, and advisory work relating to environmental protection, public health, housing standards, food safety, pollution control, and statutory nuisance, helping to create safe, healthy, and sustainable communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver a comprehensive environmental health service in accordance with statutory duties, Council priorities, and national guidance.
  • Undertake inspections of commercial premises, residential properties, licensed premises, and public facilities to assess compliance with environmental health legislation.
  • Inspect housing conditions under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and identify hazards requiring intervention.
  • Investigate incidents affecting public health, including infectious disease notifications, environmental hazards, and pollution incidents.
  • Enforce environmental health legislation using a proportionate and risk-based approach, including serving statutory notices, issuing warnings, fixed penalty notices, and initiating legal proceedings where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, equality, health and safety, data protection, and information governance requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Environmental Health accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
  • Environmental Health Practitioner registration or eligibility to practise as an Environmental Health Officer.
  • Certificate of Registration issued by the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or an equivalent recognised qualification.

Essentials:

  • Thorough knowledge of environmental health legislation, regulatory enforcement, and local government responsibilities.
  • Experience conducting inspections, investigations, audits, and enforcement activities.
  • Experience investigating statutory nuisance, environmental complaints, and public health concerns.
  • Experience preparing enforcement notices, prosecution files, witness statements, and court documentation.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity, confidentiality, and data protection principles.
