Job Description:

Rate of Pay: £13.69- £17.41 per hour
Summary:
Monmouthshire County Council is seeking a committed and physically capable Highways Operative to join its Highways Operations team. The role involves working as part of a professional crew responsible for maintaining the highway network across South East Wales to ensure safety and accessibility 24/7. The position requires carrying out a range of maintenance tasks including pothole repairs, drainage, fencing, and winter operations.
Responsibilities:
- Perform general highway maintenance duties including potholing, drainage, fencing, grass cutting, masonry, and litter picking.
- Operate construction equipment and tools (e.g., rollers, breakers, compactors, disc cutters, wheeled loading shovel).
- Conduct basic setting out and work to levels.
- Record work activity and safety assessments, possibly using electronic systems.
- Follow Health & Safety regulations, wear PPE, and report unsafe practices.
- Participate in winter maintenance duties and be available for standby/rota arrangements.
- Provide guidance to other operatives as needed.
Experience:
- Previous experience in highways or general outdoor maintenance operations is desirable.
- Experience in using construction plant and small tools is essential.
- Familiarity with health & safety procedures in manual or construction-based work settings.
Essentials:
- Ability to perform heavy physical manual work over long periods.
- Competence in operating highway maintenance equipment and tools.
- Understanding of health & safety responsibilities, including PPE usage.
- Basic IT skills or ability to use personal communication devices.
