Special Duty Officer
Job Description:
We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Lewisham to assist with the appointment of a Special Duty Officer, on a 6-month contract, likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.
Rate of Pay: £17.28 - £22.60 per hour
Summary:
The Special Duty Officer is responsible for delivering heavy-duty cleaning, clearance, and environmental safety services within the homes of vulnerable adults across Lewisham. The role supports service users by ensuring their homes are safe, clean, and free from hazards such as clutter, biohazardous waste, infestations, and unsafe household conditions.
This is a frontline, practical role requiring the ability to work in challenging environments, handle hazardous materials safely, complete risk assessments, liaise with housing and social care agencies, and maintain accurate records. The post holder must work independently and as part of a small team, demonstrating professionalism, sensitivity, and a commitment to safeguarding and dignity at work.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out heavy cleaning tasks in neglected or cluttered properties, including removing rubbish, food waste, bottles, clothing, and human waste.
- Clean surfaces, floors, living areas, doors, frames, paintwork, and household fixtures.
- Complete risk assessments before starting work at each property.
- Drive and operate a transit van, transporting chemicals, cleaning materials and waste safely.
- Attend required training, meetings and performance evaluation processes.
Requirements:
- Understanding of Health & Safety at Work regulations.
- Knowledge of hazardous substances and COSHH requirements.
- Basic understanding of the physical, emotional and social needs of older people and adults with mental health needs.
- Experience of cleaning, clearing or moving objects safely.
- Experience working with older people or adults with mental health issues.
- Experience working in difficult or unpleasant conditions.
- Experience considering referrals against service criteria (desirable).
- A full UK driving license
