E&I Engineer 

Purpose of the role: 

To maintain the safe operation of all Electrical and Instrumentation installations in the mill, ensuring maximum and optimum availability of production equipment through effective fault-finding, maintenance, and optimisation. This position requires the incumbent to be skilled and responsible for both fields. The role has no direct reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with the OSHACT and other legal requirements.

  • Manage and support OPEX and CAPEX projects.
  • Maintain and repair equipment to operate safely, reliably, and according to production requirements. Carry out maintenance as per OEM guidelines, identify risk areas, and drive reliability improvements.
  • Possess a clear understanding of automation and sound knowledge of 

    Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Quality Control Systems (QCS), and AC/DC drive systems.
  • Challenge the status quo and propose continuous improvement initiatives

  • Participate in annual budgets for the Engineering Department, ensuring alignment with planned production requirements and agreed budgets.
  • Build strong co-operative relationships with relevant departments/colleagues, keeping them informed of potential issues.
  • Maintain the preventative maintenance system (OMS) and ensure adherence to manufacturer-recommended schedules. Review and update maintenance schedules where necessary.

  • Conduct regular equipment inspections to minimise downtime and ensure spares are available and controlled.
  • Ensure contractors/service providers comply with Company policies, safety standards, and quality requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Company policies, procedures, industry best practices, and legal requirements.
  • Ensure all work, systems, and activities are OHS Act compliant.

  • Stay informed about legislative, regulatory, and standards changes.

  • Minimise equipment downtime.

  • Ensure all Electrical and Instrumentation drawings are updated and accurate.
  • Perform standby duties in line with standby procedures.

  • Participate in maintenance shutdowns.

  • Actively participate in Health & Safety programs.

  • Engage in meetings with key plant personnel to exchange information and agree on action plans.
  • Participate in performance assessments.

Requirements and Experience:

  • B.Sc. / B.Eng. / B.Tech. in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.

  • Familiarity with SANS and Eskom Electrical Standards.

  • 13 years of experience in Manufacturing, Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Engineering aspects: power distribution, electrical protection, medium and low voltage systems, power quality, AC & DC motors/drives, and motor control centres.
  • Understanding of Electrical Engineering design principles (sizing electrical distribution components such as cables, transformers, MCCs, substations, and related equipment).
  • Experience with ABB AC & DC drive systems and Valmet control systems (advantageous).
  • Knowledge of Instrumentation Engineering aspects: electronics, DC voltage distribution, valves, sensors, switches, analysers, flowmeters, and consistency transmitters.
