Job Openings Materials Engineer / Materials Scientist

About the job Materials Engineer / Materials Scientist

About Us and the Role:

At BlueShift, we aim to remove gigatons of CO2 from the ocean and atmosphere and extract valuable critical minerals from industrial waste. BlueShift unlocks rapid scalability by integrating proprietary membrane-free electrochemical technology from the University of Michigan and University of Massachusetts Amherst with additive manufacturing and existing infrastructure.

The applicant is expected to be entrepreneurial, will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on many aspects of this work. We value a flat and more collaborative structure on our small and agile team, but technically this position will report to the Chief of Science and Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a new in-house manufacturing method for BlueShift's electrodes to support the scaling of the electrochemical unit
  • Working directly with materials and equipment to manufacture redox-based electrodes to produce a high integrity product
  • Characterization of materials using SEM, UV-vis, MS and/or FTIR
  • Partnering with the team to perform testing and iterate rapidly on the design

Requirements

Must haves:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Materials Science or Materials Engineering preferred; Degrees in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with a minor or certificate in Chemistry or Materials or a related field also encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with coating techniques, polymer processing, or two-step organic synthesis
  • Experience with characterization techniques such as SEM, UV-vis, MS, and FTIR.
  • Strong problem solving skills and taking initiative to overcome obstacles
  • Creative thinking
  • Confidence and skills in building and detailed lab work
  • Passion for building technological solutions for climate change

Great to have:

  • Experience working on electrochemical systems or batteries
  • Experience with solvent extraction or related chemical separation techniques
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Receptive: Ability to receive feedback, learn from it, pivoting as needed
  • Collaborative Spirit: You're open to brainstorming and helping others get unstuck.
  • Clear Communication
  • Curiosity and a first-principles approach, being willing to question the status quo
