The Role

Overall purpose

The Assistant Cook will:

  • To prepare, cook and serve meals and snacks, in accordance with the menus provided.

Responsibilities and accountabilities

1. Deputise for the cook in his/her absence, including the direction of kitchen assistants.

2. Prepare food in accordance with menus approved.3. Assist in the preparation and handling of any external meals, including pre-packed frozen meals, for meals-on-wheels delivery and the production of meals for other units.

4. Check where appropriate deliveries for quality, quantity and description.

5. Ensure the correct and economical use of materials and equipment, to achieve maximum cost efficiency, quality and safety.

6. Cleaning kitchen areas and equipment to Directorate and environmental health standards.

7. Ensure all equipment is kept in efficient working order and that any mechanical defects or environmental faults are reported to the cook or senior officer on duty.

8. Undertake training courses and attend meetings as required.

9. Undertake any lesser or comparable duties as required by the Director.

Person Specification

Must haves:

  • Good food hygiene knowledge Practical cooking skills
  • Some experience of working in a kitchen doing food preparation Good communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Adaptable and able to provide cover in the Cooks absence#

Good to have:

  • Basic food hygiene certificate
  • City & Guilds 706 1&2 equivalent Menu planning
  • Knowledge of ordering Supervision of staff

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £12.19-£13.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
