Field Archaeologist / Crew Chief – CRM Phase I/II/III Surveys
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Field Archaeologist / Archaeological Crew Chief to lead small field teams on CRM-based Phase I, II & III surveys and excavations. This role includes site identification, construction monitoring, artifact analysis, field documentation, mapping, and report support.
This is a hands-on leadership role with 75% fieldwork in diverse environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise archaeological field crews
- Conduct Phase I/II/III CRM surveys & excavations
- Perform construction monitoring & site identification
- Collect field data, artifacts, and samples
- Complete daily field notes & standardized documentation
- Assist with archaeological reports & site forms
- Perform GPS/Trimble mapping & Total Station recording
- Coordinate field logistics & scheduling
- Maintain equipment & ensure crew safety
Required Qualifications (MUST HAVE)
- 3+ years of professional archaeology experience
- Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or related field
- Completion of an accredited archaeological field school
- CRM-based Phase I/II/III survey & excavation experience
- Strong organizational & communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel
- Valid driver's license & ability to pass motor vehicle screening
- Willingness to travel & work flexible schedules
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year leading archaeological field crews
- GPS/Trimble data collection experience
- Knowledge of historic & prehistoric material culture
- Experience with USGS topo maps & compass navigation
- Ability to independently operate a Total Station
- Archaeological reporting experience
Work Environment
- 75% outdoor fieldwork (rugged terrain, remote sites, varied weather)
- Physically demanding (lifting up to 50 lbs, digging, kneeling, hiking)
- Hybrid office schedule available after training
