Reports To: General Manager

Responsible For: Deputy Managers, Foodhall Manager, Team Leaders and Duty Management

Working Hours: 40 hours per week, flexible across a 7-day trading operation including evenings and weekends

Job Summary

The Store Manager will support the General Manager in the overall operational leadership of the store, ensuring strong standards, accountability, customer service, commercial performance, and operational efficiency.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Operational Leadership & Store Performance

Support the GM in overall store operations and deputise when required.
Maintain consistent operational standards across all departments.
Lead daily operations, labour deployment, customer experience, compliance, and store standards.
Monitor KPIs and implement corrective actions.
Support commercial targets, productivity, waste control, and customer service.
Promote teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.

  1. Duty Management

Lead by example in duty management.
Ensure Duty Managers and Team Leaders fulfil their responsibilities.
Maintain effective opening, closing, and shift handover procedures.
Ensure operational issues are identified and resolved promptly.
Monitor operational checklists and compliance documentation.

  1. People Leadership & Development

Support the development of Deputy Managers, Team Leaders and colleagues.
Provide coaching, training, and performance support.
Identify succession planning opportunities.
Promote positive communication, teamwork, and accountability.
Support onboarding and development of future leaders.

  1. Commercial Performance & Labour Management

Drive sales, labour, waste, and operational KPI targets.
Monitor labour deployment and rota effectiveness.
Review performance trends and implement improvements.
Support promotional activity and operational planning.
Provide performance reporting and analysis.

  1. Fresh Food & Foodhall Leadership

Provide leadership and support to the Foodhall Manager.
Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene, quality, and compliance.
Support sales growth, margin performance, waste control, and labour efficiency.
Monitor Foodhall KPIs and operational standards.
Support menu development, product innovation, promotions, and new product implementation.
Support team development and succession planning.

Maintain excellent customer service across all departments.
Support resolution of customer concerns.
Promote a customer-focused culture and strong store standards.

  1. Health, Safety & Compliance

Ensure compliance with health and safety and operational requirements.
Monitor compliance standards across departments.
Ensure issues identified through audits are addressed promptly.
Promote a positive safety culture.

Maintain effective communication across departments.
Support consistent management direction.
Attend leadership meetings and ensure agreed actions are completed.
Promote a positive and solutions-focused management culture.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria

Minimum 3 years' experience within the last 5 years at Store Manager, Senior Assistant Manager, or equivalent level in a fast-paced retail environment.
Experience managing sales, labour, waste, and operational KPIs.
Experience managing supervisors, team leaders, or management-level colleagues.
Strong operational and commercial leadership experience.
Experience implementing improvement plans and managing operational change.
Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Criteria

Convenience or symbol-group retail experience.
Experience in fresh food, food-to-go, deli, butchery, or food production.
Food safety and compliance knowledge.
Experience with product or menu development.
Level 3 Food Safety qualification or willingness to obtain.
