RESPIRATORY PHYSIOLOGIST BAND 6:

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Practice
uf0b7 To competently perform measurements to daily calibrate, and independently troubleshoot all
diagnostic devices in use, including partaking in weekly bio-control and monthly QA checks
following set pathway to escalate issues and communicating with external suppliers as required.
Relocating gas cylinders safely and adjusting pressures and perform decontamination cycles (per
patient or daily dependant on item) on static and portable devices.
uf0b7 To safely explore relative contraindications and relevant concerns with patients prior to testing
and to coordinate with admin and patient when rescheduling as necessary. Able to communicate
with those who may have been giving life changing/ limiting diagnosis or moving through cancer
diagnostic pathway.
uf0b7 Sensitively communicating and demonstrating required actions for patients to following during
procedure using a range or verbal and non-verbal techniques. On occasion using translation or
patients own support worker to help convey instructions. To communicate sensitively with
patients and carers at times when understanding and level of co-operation may be compromised
by age, disability or illness.
uf0b7 To perform independently and to a high technical standard the basic full lung function tests
working to the code of practice set by the professional bodies i.e. Association for Respiratory
Technology and Physiology (ARTP), Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP),
Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), British Thoracic Society (BTS), including;
o Spirometry using static and portable devices in a range of environments on patients of all
ages from primary school age to the elderly.
o Gas transfer and lung volume recordings using Helium dilution, and plethysmography.
o Bronchodilator response to SABA.
o Airways resistance measurements.
o Maximal mouth pressures.
o Skin atopy screens.
uf0b7 To deliver expert care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures attending
Croydon University Hospital. Explaining the process of testing and the importance of such
readings to their care. This will include taking equipment to the ward.
