Job Description:

Design and build automated test frameworks, pipelines, and test strategies that improve release safety, engineering velocity, and confidence across complex FSA systems and cross-system product journeys. This position supports Avyanna Technologies' work with the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid (FSA), Automated Testing Teams (ATT) program. The position is anticipated and contingent upon contract award, funding, and final staffing needs.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain automated testing frameworks and pipelines spanning API, integration, end-to-end, workflow, regression, smoke, and release-readiness testing.
• Develop reliable automated tests for complex, cross-system product flows and integrate execution into CI/CD workflows.
• Identify quality risks early and partner with engineers, product teams, and platform teams to prevent defects before release.
• Diagnose flaky tests, environment problems, test-data issues, and release failures; implement durable fixes rather than temporary workarounds.
• Develop practical test strategies that balance execution speed, useful coverage, reliability, and maintainability.
• Contribute to test standards, test metadata, test-data patterns, dashboards, quality metrics, performance-testing integration, and automated release gates.
• Serve as a quality and test-strategy lead, helping define enterprise testing standards, release-readiness criteria, automation coverage, performance-testing evidence, and actionable quality metrics.
• Provide testing and quality inputs for sprint reporting, KPI dashboards, release-readiness reviews, defect analysis, and continuous-improvement recommendations.

Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 7+ years of relevant professional experience aligned to the responsibilities and technical scope of this role.
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
• Proven ability to design and build automated test frameworks and pipelines that improve release safety and engineering velocity.
• Strong hands-on experience creating reliable tests across API, integration, end-to-end, and workflow-level scenarios.
• Experience identifying quality risks early and working with engineers to prevent defects before release, not just detect them after.
• Ability to debug flaky tests, test environment issues, and release failures and implement durable fixes.
• Demonstrated ability to drive practical test strategy for complex systems, balancing speed, coverage, and maintainability.
• Deliver measurable outcomes in complex environments: proven ability to take ownership and deliver high-quality results where priorities, requirements, and system constraints evolve.
• Collaborate effectively across disciplines: demonstrated success working cross-functionally with engineering, product, design, security, and other stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
• Communicate complex concepts with clarity: ability to clearly document, present, and explain technical and non-technical work, including tradeoffs, risks, and implementation considerations, to diverse audiences.
• Operate effectively in large-scale, mission-critical systems: demonstrated contributions to building, operating, or modernizing large-scale systems with high standards of reliability, performance, and maintainability.
• Maintain a strong end-user orientation: consistently considers the impact of decisions on end users and system stakeholders, including when working on backend, data, platform, or infrastructure components.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain the federal background investigation and suitability determination required for the position, including Public Trust eligibility.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience supporting federal or other large-scale public-sector technology programs is preferred.
• Experience with API, integration, end-to-end, performance, and CI/CD-integrated automated testing is preferred.
• Experience with GitLab, Datadog, Jira, Confluence, or comparable enterprise testing and delivery tooling is preferred.

Location

Primarily remote. Ad hoc onsite work may be required at FSA in Washington, DC based on project needs.

Salary Range

$120,000-$145,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, qualifications, technical expertise, contractual requirements, and internal equity.
