Senior Linux Engineer
Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a Senior Linux Engineer to administer, harden, and optimize Linux server infrastructure in a federal IT environment. This role ensures the reliability, security, and performance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems supporting critical agency operations, with responsibility for system configuration, patching, automation, and STIG compliance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS server environments including installation, configuration, patching, and lifecycle management
- Apply and maintain DISA STIG and CIS Benchmark hardening configurations; remediate findings from vulnerability scans (Tenable/Nessus)
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Python, and Ansible for routine administration, patch deployment, and configuration drift detection
- Manage identity and access controls: PAM, SELinux, sudo configurations, LDAP/Active Directory integration
- Monitor system health, capacity, and performance using tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, or native OS utilities; respond to and resolve incidents within SLA
- Support storage management (LVM, NFS, iSCSI) and backup/recovery operations for Linux workloads
- Collaborate with security, database, and application teams to ensure Linux platform integrity across the environment
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 6+ years of Linux system administration experience, primarily on RHEL in a federal or regulated environment
- Strong proficiency in Bash scripting; experience with Python and Ansible for automation
- Demonstrated experience applying DISA STIGs and resolving Tenable/Nessus scan findings
- Proficiency with SELinux, PAM, and Linux security hardening practices
- Familiarity with NIST 800-53 controls as applied to operating system configuration
Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust background investigation (MBI or HBI). U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
- Experience with Red Hat Satellite for patch and configuration management at scale
- Exposure to Linux workloads in AWS GovCloud or Azure Government
