Title: Tax Director, Privately Held Business 

Location: New York City, NY (Madison Ave.) 

Salary: $194,000 – $254,000

Overview: Accounting and consulting firm is seeking a Tax Director to join its Privately Held Business practice in New York City. This is a senior leadership role responsible for managing complex tax engagements, driving business development, and developing the next generation of tax professionals — all within a firm that emphasizes career growth, work-life integration, and a collaborative culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform technical review of engagement work papers and tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S-corps, and C-corps
  • Provide consultation on business and/or personal transactions and their related tax implications, consequences, and treatment
  • Develop responses to IRS and other regulatory and tax authority audits, notices, and inquiries
  • Manage larger, complex engagements and multi-client workflows to minimize risk, meet deadlines, and maximize engagement economics
  • Lead new business development opportunities
  • Identify and pursue extended service opportunities within the existing client base
  • Conduct or review high-level research on complex and emerging tax issues; prepare supporting memorandums
  • Ensure appropriate resource assignment across engagement roles
  • Stay current on tax law changes and provide updates and training to the broader tax practice
  • Mentor and develop less experienced professionals on engagement management, budgeting, scheduling, staffing, and client relations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related discipline
  • CPA, JD, or EA designation (must be qualified to practice before the IRS)
  • Minimum 8 years of public accounting experience in taxation or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years in a managerial role involving clients and team members

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation
  • Subject matter expert in a specific area of taxation
