Role Overview:
As a Layout Artist, you will be responsible for creating and setting up the initial shots and sequences in a production. Your work will form the blueprint for all subsequent VFX and animation work, so precision and creative problem-solving are key.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shot Layout: Establish the composition, camera angles, movement, and timing for shots in accordance with the director's vision and production requirements.
- Blocking & Staging: Define character and object positions, and work with animators and other artists to ensure that all elements are properly placed within the environment for shots.
- Scene Setup: Position and arrange 3D models, props, and environment elements to create a visually compelling and technically sound base for further animation and VFX work.
- Camera Work: Set up camera rigs, work on camera angles, lenses, focal lengths, and movements to convey the desired tone and perspective for each shot.
- Collaboration: Work closely with directors, VFX supervisors, environment artists, and animators to ensure that the layout integrates smoothly with other departments and remains consistent with the overall vision.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Address and troubleshoot layout-related issues, including the integration of assets, composition, and performance requirements.
- Pre-visualization (Previs): Create rough pre-visualization sequences that outline the visual flow of scenes, including blocking, camera work, and basic timing.
- Feedback Implementation: Incorporate feedback from the director, supervisors, and other team members, adjusting layouts as necessary to refine the shots and align with production goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 3D Layout Experience: Solid experience working as a layout artist or in a similar role within the VFX or animation industry.
- Software Proficiency: Expertise in industry-standard 3D software such as Maya, Houdini, Unreal, or equivalent, and familiarity with layout-specific tools.
- Camera & Composition Skills: Strong understanding of camera work, staging, and composition to create dynamic shots that are visually appealing and narratively effective.
- Understanding of VFX & Animation Pipelines: Knowledge of VFX workflows and pipelines, with a clear understanding of how layout fits into the overall production process.
- Collaboration & Communication: Ability to work within a team, taking feedback constructively and effectively communicating with various departments.
- Portfolio: A strong portfolio that demonstrates your layout work, including camera setups, composition, and the final execution of 3D layout shots in VFX-heavy sequences.
Desirable Skills :
- Experience with Virtual Production techniques and tools, especially with Unreal Engine.
Familiarity with stereoscopic 3D and depth management for VFX.
- Understanding of motion graphics, lighting setups, and how they relate to layout and camera positioning.
- Experience in previs (pre-visualization), storyboarding, or animatics creation.
- Knowledge of narrative storytelling, with the ability to convey emotions and action through camera work and layout design.
Education & Experience:
- A degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Animation, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or related field (preferred but not mandatory).
- 4-6 years of experience in VFX, animation, or related fields, specifically as a layout artist or in a similar role.
