Job Overview:
A 3D Digital Matte Painting (DMP) Generalist is responsible for creating high-quality photo-realistic environments, landscapes, and set extensions for films, TV, and games. This role combines traditional matte painting techniques with 3D workflows, utilizing tools like Unreal Engine, Maya, Houdini, Photoshop, and Nuketo deliver seamless and immersive digital environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Matte Painting & Environment Creation:
Create high-resolution 2D and 2.5D matte paintings integrated with 3D scenes.
Design realistic digital environments, set extensions, and sky replacements.
Work closely with VFX supervisors, art directors, and compositors to achieve the desired visual style.
3D Asset Integration & Projection:
Convert 2D DMPs into 2.5D and 3D projections using software like Nuke, Maya, or Houdini.
Integrate 3D assets, textures, and lighting into matte-painted backgrounds for a seamless look.
Utilize Unreal Engine for real-time DMP workflows and virtual production.
Lighting & Rendering:
Apply realistic lighting, shading, and texturing to match live-action footage.
Render scenes efficiently using Arnold, V-Ray, Redshift, or Unreal Engine.
Work with HDRI, PBR materials, and photogrammetry for enhanced realism.
Collaboration & Pipeline Integration:
Work closely with CG artists, compositors, and layout teams to integrate matte paintings into VFX shots.
Ensure assets are optimized for real-time or pre-rendered workflows.
Follow industry-standard VFX pipelines and best practices.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Software Proficiency:
Adobe Photoshop (Essential)
Autodesk Maya / Blender (3D modeling & layout)
Nuke (Compositing & Projection)
Unreal Engine (Real-time DMP workflows)
Substance Painter / Mari (Texturing)
Render Engines: Arnold
Technical & Artistic Skills:
Strong understanding of composition, color, perspective, and lighting.
Ability to work with LIDAR scans, photogrammetry, and high-resolution textures.
Knowledge of 3D projections and camera mapping.
Experience in photo-bashing and texture blending for realism.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in the film, TV, VFX, or game industry.
Strong portfolio showcasing photo-realistic matte paintings and 3D environment work.
