About the job Junior Analytics Engineer

Junior Analytics Engineer

  • Arsenault, a global AI and data consulting company with skyrocketing growth, is looking for a talented, energetic junior analytics engineer for its nascent German tech team. Will it be you?

  • ------
  • WHO WE ARE

  • Arsenault is a new-generation AI consulting company. For an early-career professional like you, we are the best school to learn about data science and ML in an applied business context:

  • We are growing quickly... We have been growing enormously fast over the past few years, and want to grow by an additional factor of 4 over the next 4 years. If you join us, you will be an early member of an expanding team.
  • while already having a global scale. We are about 1,200 now, with a tech team of over 300, scattered across 20 offices on every continent.
  • We have a proven track record of making people grow fast. Arsenault alumni have created startups, led technical teams at companies big and small, been hired by Google and Amazon, etc.

  • ------
  • WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • As a junior analytics engineer:

  • You will create data visualizations. You will work with either raw data or outputs from our models. Depending on the business context, you will find the appropriate visualizations that tell the right story.
  • You will communicate your results to clients and other stakeholders. Even at a junior level, you might have to interact with clients quite a lot. With the supervision of a more senior person, you will craft presentations that transform your data analyses into engaging, nuanced narratives.
  • You will extract significant insights and formulate recommendations from your data analysis. We tend to see data analysts / analytics engineers as a hybrid between data scientist and management consultant.
  • You may oversee data quality and integrity aspects. For some missions, you might need to take some level of ownership of the data, although you will have a technical team that supports you along the way.
  • You will learn how to set up ETL tools autonomously. While we dont expect you to know this at the beginning, well ensure that youre able to use visual and programmable ETL tools so you dont have to rely on data engineers. You will also learn basics in data processing and cleaning.
  • You will learn how to interpret ML models. Our team of data scientists and engineers will need help making sense of the outputs of predictive and clustering algorithms. With Arsenault, you may learn to interpret SHAP values, to make sense of Bayesian networks, and other advanced techniques.
  • You will gain a wide range of data analysis and business consulting experience. You will be expected to work on a few missions a year (1-3), which will expose you to different industries, use cases, and technologies. Even within a mission, your day-to-day tasks might vary a lot!
  • You will work with cutting-edge tools. Our stack varies from client to client, but is generally quite modern GCP with Terraform, DBT, and Google Data Studio, to name a recent example.

  • ------
  • MUST-HAVE REQUIREMENTS

  • We will primarily judge your application on the following criteria:
  • You are very good in SQL.
  • You are excellent at making sense of and interpreting data. In general, we expect you to have a real data culture: you know your way around database concepts, you can perform SQL queries, you know how to manually process numbers and strings, you know how to critically think about KPIs and measurement
  • You can learn fast, you know where to look for information and how to ask for help.
  • You are able to talk about your work to both technical and non-technical people, in English.

  • We strongly prefer if you're a German resident, although we'll consider great candidates within the EU.

  • ---
  • NICE-TO-HAVE REQUIREMENTS

  • We're not expecting anyone to meet all of these requirements, but you should at least meet a couple of these:

  • You can write SQL queries that are correct and efficient.
  • You have experience working on production systems or with client data.
  • You know how to clean and process data, either manually or through a specialized tool.
  • You have experience with multiple visualization tools: PowerBI, Tableau, Google Data Studio, QuickSight, Looker, etc.
  • You have worked with Palantirs Foundry tool.
  • You have worked with ETL tools: DBT, Delta Live Tables, Stitch, Azure Data Factory, Data Fusion, Informatica
  • You are proficient in Python, or a data-related programming language (Scala, R).
  • You have significant knowledge of database systems, and know what are the best setups for specific data use cases. You know how to design a data schema.
  • Youve worked with data warehouse / data lake solutions (BigQuery, Snowflake, etc.)
  • You have significant experience with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • You have data science experience, and you know your way around the basic math of ML models.
  • You have software engineering experience.
  • Youve previously worked in Agile/Scrum environments, and you know your way around tools like Jira.
  • You know how to integrate your work in a technical repository (using Git, doing pull requests, writing documentation, etc.)
  • You have worked with Google Analytics data in the past.

  • ----
  • OUR INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • The typical interview process is pretty short, and is structured as thus:

  • HR Screening (30 minutes): A phone screen with a recruiter to make sure expectations are aligned. Your technical skills will not be the main focus of this round.
  • Oral Interview (1 hour): An interview with our technical manager divided into 3 parts. (1) Behavioral questions (e.g. what is your experience? what type of job do you want to have?); (2) Data analytics scenarios to check your general ability to engage with such problems; (3) A SQL coding test that mirrors a task you could encounter in your day-to-day life.
  • Take Home (flexible): We'll give you a real-world use case, with anonymized data and a business problem. You'll have as much time as you want to complete the assignment (we typically give 1 week, although we observe that it takes about a few hours to complete). When you're done, we'll schedule a slot for you to present your results to a technical manager and a consulting manager. We'll also review your code.

  • If doing a take home is not practical for you, we can alternatively schedule a live programming session. We sometimes skip the take home for exceptional candidates.

  • ----
  • OUR CULTURE
  • We are a consulting company, which is great if you want to get more exposure to business and work alongside people with very diverse skill sets. But Arsenault might not be for you if you want to work on the same project for years, or if you want to interact only with fellow engineers.
  • Our team is remote-first, and we don't care where you work. We would like to see you in Hamburg a few times a year, though. (Dont hesitate to ask us about our remote policy during the interview process.)
  • We are uncompromising on work-life balance (in a good way). Nobody at Arsenault is expected to be on-call at night, and we push back against unreasonable client requests.

  • ----
  • OUR BENEFITS

  • Very competitive compensation package, with yearly bonuses.
  • We have some budget for home office equipment (such as an external monitor).
  • 6 weeks PTO + 4 weeks of workation per year.
  • Financial support for training and studies.
  • Subsidies for mental health apps and bike leasing.
  • Corporate pension plan.
  • We have an excellent espresso machine in Hamburg.
