Job description (Workshop Supervisor & Certified Diagnosis Technician)
As per Daimler Standard
1. Summary of Job Functions, Responsibilities & Authorities.
Systematic performance of complex fault diagnoses including follow-up (i.e, monitoring of the repair process, performance of
final checks and, if required, handing over the vehicle to the customer).
Support of workshop colleagues in systematic fault diagnosis.
Documentation of diagnosis results. Preparation of Daimler TIPS
Informing workshop colleagues about technical innovations and communication of important information regarding fault
diagnosis.
Optimization of diagnostic procedures and therefore productivity as well as workshop process and assurance that the workshop
can independently and professionally solve even difficult diagnosis cases.
His main tasks lie in diagnosis, support of diagnosis and repair work, final check, and vehicle handover (in special cases) and
knowledge management and transfer in the workshop.
II. Communications.
Reports to Service Manager.
Workshop Supervisor: Get guidance and consultancy in the context of order disposition and personnel management.
Diagnostic Experts: In fruitless and difficult diagnostic cases, qualified contacting, and case handover to /case clarification with support of NSM Flying Doctor.
System Technicians: In difficult, fruitless diagnosis cases provide support, advice, train indicate alternative approaches, and/or
establish contact with Diagnosis Support Center (.IIPCO). Qualifying the System Technicians on the job.
Maintenance Technicians: Support on a case-by-case basis for diagnoses and qualifications on the job
Customers: Direct order clarification and vehicle return discussions in special cases, such as repeat complaints.
Ill. Task/s
Diagnosis
Systematic and professional performance of complex diagnoses by using appropriate diagnostic tools and facilities.
If required, contact the customer to achieve additional information on specific malfunctions.
If required and in cooperation with System Technician or Diagnosis Expert, fault diagnosis under dynamic test conditions
within the workshop and/or on the road.
Determination of failure cause and initiation of possible problem-solving measures.
Comparison of actual vehicle conditions with current productionconfigurations and evaluation of the vehicle-specific technical
conditions.
Documentation of diagnosis methods and procedures in a suitable form.
Contact to Diagnosis Expert at Diagnosis Support Center in case of particularly complex problems and/or so far fruitless
diagnoses.
Contact Superintendent/Service Manager to minimize overtime and/or to achieve release for warranty & goodwill
Support of Diagnostic and Repair Work
Advice and support of workshop staff during complex diagnosis cases.
Ensures that workshop staffs perform diagnoses systematically.
Advice and support of workshop staff in troubleshooting.
Arrangement for the repair work indicated as necessary by the diagnosis, using the prescribed tools and equipment, in coordination with the
Maintenance/System Technician or, if required, the performance of this work.
Controlling/ performance of adjustments indicated by the diagnosis as necessary.
Performance of final function and quality tests to secure sustainable repairs.
Arranging, supervising, or in specific cases installing technically advanced extras and securing their functionality.
Final check and vehicle hand-over (only in special cases)
Performance of final checks by using testing and measuring equipment checks the operational reliability of major components under dynamic test conditions.
Checks, if the vehicle is in an appropriate condition to leave the service area.
If required and in co-operation with the Service Advisor, personal handover of the vehicle to customer and explanation of accomplished repair works.
If necessary, additional instructions on handling to customer.
If required or in co-operation with the Service Advisor, final test run with the customer.
Other Specialist Tasks
Giving colleagues in the workshop technical advice and information regarding productspecific problems.
Build up and cultivate contacts with persons in central service units to solve difficult technical problems.
Regularly passing on data on diagnosis results (TIPSCase Database) to contacts in relevant Support Centers.
Independently learning about new vehicle systems, especially structure and function, and transfer this knowledge to colleagues in the workshop and if necessary, to customers.
Preparation of technical product reports including vehicle problems, fault causes, and suitable solutions and coordination with the Service Advisor and the Workshop Foreman.
Initiation oforders for special tools (required for diagnosis and repair on new products and systems) in co-ordination with the workshop management.
Check diagnosis equipments for updates and correct parameter settings.
lV. Competency Required
Education & / or Field of Expertise: Certificate from Daimler Training Center.
Experience/s: Minimum 2 years work experience as System Technician ideally two fields of competence.
Trainings:
Training series for certified Diagnosis Technician (i.e. extension of diagnosis skills, methods oftrouble shooting) and yearly participation on manufacturer product trainings.
Re-certification necessary every 2 years

Excellent and detailed system knowledge of automotive vehicles, vehicle service, vehicle repair and vehicle diagnosis.
Knowledge of structure, function and networking of systems, components, major assemblies, etc. in combination with other systems.
Very good background in vehicle electronics and data bus systems.
Good knowledge of telecommunications, software handling, lT-networks and menu structures.
Can operate all current equipment and systems.
Knows all maintenance, test and adjustment works or can quickly acquaint himselfwith them.
Diagnostic competence
Can create and document complex diagnoses, particularly with networked systems, and can provide this information with
clearly structured commentary to third parties.
Develops in unsuccessful cases independently alternative diagnosis methods and implement these alternatives on basis of existing diagnosis equipment.
Can employ new diagnosis approaches and equipment and can assess their efficiency.
Can instruct and support Maintenance/System Technicians on diagnosis and trouble shooting.
Recognizes when further diagnosis will be inefficient and is qualified to contact the Diagnosis Expert or to route the vehicle to the next Superintendent.
Method and process competence
Can organize knowledge management and transfer as well as build up and maintain an info database.
Very good knowledge of procedures and key persons in the workshop, in relevant customer support areas and by external service providers.
Good knowledge of group and servicespecific structures.
Good knowledge of brand-specific processes (e.g. workshop processes).
Self-reliant planning and organization of diagnosis within workshop procedure by assistance of all current workshop information and management systems.
