Lead Engineer – Substation & Energy Infrastructure

Location: Remote 

Duration: 12-Month Contract 

Schedule: Monday–Friday (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)

Overview

Our client, a leading energy infrastructure organization, is seeking a Lead Engineer (Level 4) to support substation and utility-scale energy projects across their portfolio. This is a replacement position within a high-impact engineering and construction team, responsible for overseeing projects from early-stage development through execution and commissioning.

This role requires a highly experienced engineering leader with deep expertise in substation design, grid interconnection, and utility-scale renewable energy projects including solar, BESS, and transmission systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead substation projects across the full lifecycle: development, engineering, construction, and commissioning
  • Partner with early-stage development teams to define engineering scope, feasibility, and technical requirements
  • Provide technical oversight and governance to external Engineers of Record (EORs) and engineering consultants
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE, NESC, ASCE, ISO requirements, and interconnection agreements
  • Support transmission and interconnection activities, including:
    • System impact studies
    • Facility studies
    • Reactive and harmonic analysis
    • Interconnection agreements
  • Manage engineering procurement activities:
    • Develop scopes of work
    • Evaluate bids and select vendors
    • Coordinate with supply chain for contracting
  • Oversee long-lead equipment procurement and mitigate cost/schedule risks
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders across engineering, construction, supply chain, and legal teams
  • Represent engineering in executive-level discussions, providing updates on:
    • Project progress
    • Risks and mitigation strategies
    • Technical decisions
  • Support cost estimating, scope development, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in commissioning activities and ensure successful project delivery
  • Collaborate with OEMs to optimize equipment design and integration

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related field)
  • 15+ years of experience in power, utilities, or energy infrastructure projects
  • Strong expertise in substation engineering and transmission systems
  • Proven experience leading large-scale, multi-disciplinary engineering projects
  • Deep knowledge of engineering standards and regulatory requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects (solar, BESS, wind)
  • Strong background in:
    • Grid interconnection processes
    • System studies and power systems analysis
    • Engineering risk management
  • Experience working in matrixed or enterprise-level organizations
