BESS Commissioning Manager

Overview

Our client is a leading national energy infrastructure developer and constructor, undertaking some of the most significant power generation and transmission projects in the country. They are seeking a highly experienced BESS Commissioning Manager – Analytics to support one of the world's leading Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developers. This role will serve as the Owner's Representative, overseeing commissioning, testing, and startup activities for energy storage and solar-coupled power systems.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in BESS commissioning, performance testing, and SCADA systems, with a strong ability to analyze plant performance remotely while supporting on-site commissioning activities as needed.

Key Responsibilities

· Act as the Owner's Representative for commissioning activities across BESS and solar-coupled projects

· Oversee and report on commissioning, startup, and testing activities performed by contractors and vendors

· Conduct and support plant testing, performance testing, and system startup

· Lead and support ISO, GIA, and PPA testing activities

· Develop and manage commissioning plans and schedules aligned with mechanical completion milestones

· Coordinate with SCADA integrators and project teams for system checks and commissioning execution

· Support ICCP IT SCADA teams with functional testing and system validation

· Execute site acceptance testing (SAT) in collaboration with vendors and stakeholders

· Perform OEM testing, plant balancing, and capacity testing

· Monitor and analyze performance data to identify deficiencies and recommend improvements

· Manage test energy forecasts in coordination with customers

· Support AVR/AGC notifications and testing

· Participate in safety programs, audits, and compliance activities

· Provide regular status reporting and updates to leadership and stakeholders

Required Skills & Experience

· Extensive experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) installation, commissioning, and startup

· Proven background in utility-scale energy storage projects (minimum 100 MWh or 5+ BESS systems)

· Strong understanding of Li-Ion battery systems, integration, and performance characteristics

· Deep knowledge of DC systems (0–2000Vdc) and AC systems (480V–34.5kV)

· Experience with SCADA systems, controls, and troubleshooting

· Strong understanding of containerized systems, skids, transformers, and combiners

· Experience developing and executing commissioning processes and schedules

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to interpret performance data

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

· Excellent communication skills with ability to interact with executives, clients, and third parties

· Strong organizational and planning capabilities

Preferred Qualifications

· Background in power systems engineering, construction, or startup/commissioning

· Experience working with solar + storage hybrid systems

· Familiarity with ICCP protocols and advanced SCADA integrations

· Experience supporting grid compliance testing with ISO/RTO/TO entities

Reporting Structure

· Reports to: Senior Commissioning Project Manager

Work Environment & Travel

· Primarily remote role with support via SCADA monitoring and analytics

· Travel up to 25% within the U.S. for on-site commissioning and testing activities

Physical Requirements

· Ability to distinguish color-coded controls on HMI systems

· Ability to sit and work on screens for extended periods

· Ability to operate a motor vehicle for travel between work locations
