Section Head, Molecular and Translational Pathology

Department

Reporting to

Chairman, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine 

Role Summary

The Section Head oversees all clinical, operational, and quality aspects of the Molecular and Translational Pathology section. The role ensures compliance with international accreditation standards, provides expert diagnostic and consultative services, leads test development in molecular pathology and genomics, and supports bioinformatics infrastructure and scientific research.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Medical Leadership

  • Provide medical direction for test selection, methodology, and clinical relevance. 
  • Deliver diagnostic and consultative services within granted privileges. 
  • Review and validate critical results and unexpected test findings. 

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with JCI, AABB, CAP, CBAHI, ISO 15189, and NGHA standards. 
  • Maintain and continuously improve service quality and patient safety protocols. 
  • Monitor staff adherence to quality, safety, and hospital policies. 

Operational Management

  • Provide 24/7 medical coverage oversight for the specialty section. 
  • Approve and monitor external referral lab test send-outs. 
  • Support application maintenance, testing, and operational setup of laboratory systems.

Test Development & Innovation

  • Develop, update, and validate laboratory tests in:
    • Molecular genetics
    • Molecular pathology
    • Genomics
    • Oncology
    • Bioinformatics 
  • Build algorithms, analysis pipelines, and custom tools for genomic sequencing workflows.
  • Implement and maintain clinical bioinformatics infrastructure. 
  • Design web‑based tools for querying large-scale biological databases. 

Teaching & Research

  • Lead and participate in training for staff, students, interns, and residents. 
  • Support continued professional development for physicians and laboratory professionals. 
  • Contribute to research activities, scientific reporting, and publications. 

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Medical degree with completed internship and residency or PhD in a related field.
  • American Board of Pathology certification or equivalent. 
  • Valid licensure to practice.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years post-residency in the specialty. 
  • Proven managerial experience in a tertiary-care, preferably CAP-accredited, hospital

Skills

  • English (Level I) and Arabic proficiency.
  • Computer skills (Level I): Microsoft Office, clinical systems (e.g., BestCare). 
  • Strong decision-making skills related to diagnostic interpretation
