JOB SUMMARY
A Gastroenterology Assistant Consultant is a physician who has completed specialized training in gastroenterology and holds a senior position within a hospital or medical practice, working under the direct supervision of a full Consultant or Associate Consultant. Their responsibilities include patient diagnosis and treatment, performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, providing consultations, supervising junior staff, and participating in teaching and research activities. To become one, a physician typically needs to complete a medical degree, residency in internal medicine, and a gastroenterology fellowship, followed by gaining experience and potentially passing a professional certification exam.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To provide high-standard care to patients with gastrointestinal disease and its sequelae in the Division of Gastroenterology within the Department of Medicine under the supervision of a Consultant(s)/Associate Consultant.
- To provide inpatient care for the Gastroenterology patients admitted to the hospital under the name of the Consultant with whom he/she works. This inpatient care would involve daily rounds on all patients assigned to the general gastroenterology service. Part of the inpatient gastroenterology care would also relate to the supervision of the medical residents rotating in Gastroenterology. The assistant consultant is also expected to be obliged by the organizational, departmental, and divisional regulations, which pertain to inpatient care.
- To participate in the delivery of health care to all Gastroenterology patients in the ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a Consultant/Associate Consultant. This participation would include caring for patients attending the regular Gastroenterology ambulatory services under the direct supervision of a Consultant/Associate Consultant gastroenterologist.
- To provide, under the direct supervision of the Consultant/Associate Consultant, consultation service to other divisions within the Department, and other departments within the hospital during the regular working and the on-call hours. The educational component of this consultation services to the staff in other services should also be valued during daily work
- To perform diagnostic and/or therapeutic interventions and procedures to the gastrointestinal patents for which he/she is granted specific privileges based on his/her training, qualifications and experience according to the specific privileging conditions approved by the Department and the organization
- To participate in the on-call coverage of the Gastroenterology service in accordance with the rules and relations of the division of gastroenterology
- To attend all clinical, educational, and patient welfare meetings of the Division of Gastroenterology as established by the division. Attendance of the general activities of the Department of Medicine is also considered an important component of the job of the assistant consultant in Gastroenterology
- To participate in scientific research relevant to gastrointestinal diseases, contribute into the division and department educational activities and post-graduate training programs, and to serve in committees as directed by the Head, Division of Gastroenterology, Department Chairman or the Executive Management of the organization
- To optimally utilize resources, show continuous evidence of self-development and participate in Quality Improvement program of the Division of Gastroenterology and the Department of Medicine
- To adhere to all rules and regulations of the Division, the Department, and the organization and to comply with all the APPs and IPPs
- To perform other relevant duties and tasks as directed by the Head of Gastroenterology or the Chairman of the Department of Medicine
- To comply with all the professional and ethical standards and express adherence to the Medical staff Bylaws of the organization
- To show the expected respect, at all times, to patients, their families, colleagues, subordinates and all other members of the healthcare team.
Education
- Graduate from a medical school of good standing.
- Completion of the required period of training in GIT.
- (Arab, Jordanian, Egyptian) Board certification in the relevant medical GIT is typically required or equivalent.
- Membership and/or Fellowship or their equivalent and fulfilling the criteria for the consultant as required
- A certificate recognized by the Saudi commission is a must.
- Dataflow is a must.
Professional Experience
- Min. 5 years Post Board/Fellowship in GIT.
- A registered member of the Saudi Board Council
Language
- Proficiency in English; additional proficiency in Arabic may be beneficial.
