JOB SUMMARY
An Assistant Consultant Emergency Medicine provides direct clinical care, supervises junior staff and residents, assists with departmental operations and policy development, participates in training and education, and contributes to quality improvement and administrative functions within the emergency department. The role requires extensive clinical skills in managing life-threatening conditions and injuries, strong leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the oversight of the daily operation of his assigned shift in the ED and ED Related areas.
- Assists in developing departmental goals and objectives.
- Assists in the design, implementation, reviews and updates of Policies and Procedures for the ED every 2 years.
- Orients and keeps himself updated (initially & periodically after return from annual vacations) regarding the most currently revised hospital and department policies, procedures, standards and rules.
- Orients, advises & updates members / colleagues in the ED regarding the most currently revised hospital and department policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
- Adhere to hospital I department regulations pertaining to essential medical ED Chart documentation, utilization of personal l.D. stamps and hospital electronic medical records applications as designated in current phase.
- Maintains his certification status (BLS, ACLS ATLS PALS, NRP & VIS course) updated as well as maintaining his required CME Credits for the Saudi Council for Health Specializations (SCHS).
- Participates in the implementation of the ED Performance Improvement Plan (PIP); criteria, standards & indicators to evaluate, monitor, and implement changes and re-evaluates changes to improve the quality and appropriateness of practice by the department; in accordance with JCIA standards.
- Participates & attends on assigned hospital committees.
- Monitors, interprets and reports concerning utilization & productivity (e.g. Consultations in ED Policy) statistics.
- Assists in delegating appropriate duties & responsibilities to staff within the department commensurate with their education, experience and job description.
- Liaison & coordination on operational issues with the Nursing Division Leadership (DCN, NS & NM).
- Liaison & coordination oversight with Patient Relations Supervisor & Officers on patient complaints, sick leave issuance, medical report issuance& follow-up.
- Assists and leads in training and education of junior staff in maintain skill levels.
- Assists in conducting annual performance appraisals of ED department staff as requested by ED Chairman.
- Become familiar and competency understand his role expectations during Disaster Response (Code Black), Participates & leads in the implementation of medical contingency disaster plans for the ED; including Medical operations oversight, emergency response and medical evacuation during his clinical shift.
- Assists Junior ED Members in the care of patients who require special skills because of the nature of severity of their presenting complaint. Authenticate disposition and plan of management of all patients in the Emergency Department.
- Residency Training Program participation, active participation in training and evaluation within the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine which are within the post-holder's qualifications and capabilities.
Certified:
- Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
- Ultrasound (UIS).
- Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Sedation Course.
- Must comprehend and avoid potential unethical conduct or conflict of interest situations.
- Have a high standard of medical ethics and a sense of responsibility as judged by his supervisors and colleagues.
- Exhibits professionalism & excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Is knowledgeable of the Hospital Medical Staff bylaws.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Graduate from a medical school of good standing.
- Completion of required period of training in emergency medicine
- Arab Jordanian, Egyptian Board certification in the relevant medical emergency medicine is typically required or equivalent.
- Membership and/or Fellowship or their equivalent and fulfilling the criteria for the consultant as required
- A certificate recognized by the Saudi commission is a must.
- Dataflow is a must.
Professional Experience
- Min. 5 years Post Board/Fellowship in ER.
- A registered member of the Saudi Board Council
Language
- Proficiency in English; additional proficiency in Arabic may be beneficial.
