Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Library Assistant to join our team in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Library Assistant will be responsible for providing support to the library staff and ensuring the smooth operation of the library. The ideal candidate will have a passion for libraries and a strong understanding of library systems and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assisting with the day-to-day operations of the library, including shelving, cataloging, and circulation of materials
- Providing excellent customer service to library patrons and assisting with their information needs
- Maintaining the library's physical and digital collections, including organizing and processing new materials
- Assisting with library events and programs, such as storytime and book clubs
- Managing the library's social media presence and creating promotional materials
- Conducting basic research and compiling information for library staff and patrons
- Assisting with the maintenance of library equipment and technology
- Collaborating with other library staff to develop and implement new services and initiatives
- Maintaining accurate records and statistics related to library usage and services
- Assisting with the training and supervision of volunteers and student workers
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, with a strong interest in libraries and information management
- Previous experience working in a library or customer service role is preferred
- Familiarity with library systems and procedures, such as cataloging and circulation, is an asset
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with social media platforms
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, as needed
