Position Summary

The Marine Fitter is responsible for maintenance, repair, and fabrication work related to the vessels machinery, piping systems, and structural components.
This role supports the Engine Department to ensure the vessel operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with STCW standards.

Suitable for deployment on Bulk Carrier, Container Ship, General Cargo Vessel, Tanker, or other merchant vesselsdepending on company assignment.

 Key Responsibilities (STCW-Aligned)

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and fitting work on mechanical systems, including pumps, valves, pipes, brackets, foundations, and structural fittings.
  • Assist in overhauling main engine (ME), auxiliary engines (AE), and shipboard machinery under direction of engineering officers.
  • Conduct welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication work using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain piping systems, seawater systems, ballast lines, engine room structures, and related components.
  • Fabricate metal parts based on drawings, sketches, or officer instructions.
  • Follow Permit to Work (PTW), Lock Out/Tag Out procedures, and vessel safety management systems.
  • Maintain workshop tools and ensure safe working practices in accordance with STCW and vessel SMS.
  • Support engineers during dry dock, docking repairs, and planned maintenance.
  • Report work progress, equipment defects, and repair needs to responsible engineering officers.

 Minimum Requirements

  • Valid STCW Certificates (Basic Training mandatory; Tanker familiarization if assigned to tanker vessels).
  • Valid Seaman Book and medical fitness certificate.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as Marine Fitter or equivalent rank on merchant vessels.
  • Ability to perform welding, cutting, metal fabrication, and assembly tasks safely and accurately.
  • Understanding of marine engines, auxiliary machinery, and engine room systems.
  • Can read and follow simple technical drawings or instruction sketches.

 English Communication Requirement (Important)

  • Must be able to communicate in English at a functional level:

    • understand work instructions from engineering officers
    • report job progress and issues
    • communicate during safety meetings and emergency drills

English communication is required due to multinational crew environment.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on Bulk Carrier, Container, General Cargo, or Tanker vessels.
  • Familiar with electronic-controlled engine systems (advantage).
  • Experience using lathe machines or precision fitting tools (optional but valuable).
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to work independently when required.

  • 2nd Engineer / 3rd Engineer
  • Chief Engineer (overall supervision)
