Mechanic 1st Class Equip Shop

Position Summary:
Orders parts for numerous different pieces of equipment for the equipment shop. Helps in delegating work in shop, assists in troubleshooting and repair of equipment and works to keep a safe working environment. Carries out administrative duties and works as a shift leader when assigned on shift and promotes safe and efficient Port work practices.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Order parts for terminal equipment such as yard trucks, chassis, forklifts, empty handlers, top loaders, and automobiles. Ensure parts are received in a timely manner
  • Maintain a readily available supply of consumables such as nuts and bolts, wiper blades, brass fittings, hydraulic hose, hydraulic fittings, electric connectors and air brake valves
  • Stock oil, fuel, air, hydraulic and water filters
  • Assign work to mechanics for repair and regular maintenance to all equipment and inspect work for adherence to departmental standards
  • Dispatch emergency services such as tire repair and repairs to equipment as needed
  • Enforce departmental rules and regulations governing employees
  • Supervise shop safety and maintenance
  • Coordinate repair work with dealers for vehicles and equipment under warranty
  • Coordinate repair work with contractors, tenants, and customers
  • Assist and advise mechanics with complex or unusual assignments
  • Supervise shop operations in the absence of the Foreman
  • Lead a group of mechanics and electricians and coordinate maintenance related activities during shift work
  • Reconcile downtime events after each occurrence with representative from Operations Dept., email shift log to supervisors at end of shift
  • Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
  • Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 5+ years mechanic experience required
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:
  • Knowledge of mechanics
  • Knowledge of automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge of equipment parts
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Ability to climb and be comfortable at heights
  • Organizational skills
  • Judgment and quick-thinking skills
  • Ability to give written and oral directions
  • Ability to operate forklift, if needed
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
