Casualty and Assistance Calls Officer Administrative Assistant

Casualty Assistance Officers are responsible for notifying family members when a service member has died. A CAO will provide as much information as available regarding the circumstances of the member's death and answer any questions. The CAO will immediately begin the process of aiding in making funeral or memorial arrangements as appropriate.

 

As a CACO Administrative Assistant your responsibility is providing administrative support for the tasks related to CACO program. You will assist with coordination of funeral honors for entitled personnel within the Navy Region Southeast, NAS Jacksonville, FL. You will also assist beneficiaries in the preparation and submission of claims to various government agencies for benefits to which they may be entitled.

 

This role is considered a high visibility position and requires excellent communication skills. You’ll collaborate with various outside government agencies, discuss benefits with affected family members, and provide reports to senior personnel. The work schedule for this position may include weekends and holidays due to the unusual nature of the work.

Daily Duties

-       Receive and report notifications of casualties

 

-       Research and process disposition cases

 

-       Ensure burial arrangements are made in accordance with procedures

 

-       Review federal and state laws to determine benefits and entitlements for families

 

-       Advise and provide counseling on benefits provided by law

 

-       Receive calls from next of kin (NOK) and funeral directors for funeral honors

 

-       Determine eligibility for military honors and request appropriate documentation

 

-       Prepare and enter “horns request” into “HONORS Tracker” database

 

-       Forward honors tasking to appropriate commands

 

-       Input “After Action Reports” into database

 

-       Field questions from next of kin (NOK) funeral directors, and funeral honor coordinator

 

 

 

 

 

Skills

-       Proven experience as an administrative assistant or providing casualty assistance

 

-       Working knowledge of Navy automated systems and procedures

 

-       Must have high level of interpersonal and problem-solving skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Position continually requires demonstrated poise and tact.

 

-       Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with a focus on Outlook and Word

 

-       Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work

 

-       Attention to detail and problem-solving skills

 

-       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

-       Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task

 

-       Must be capable of conducting meetings and conferences and possess the ability to demonstrate informative and persuasive speaking
