Job Summary: The nurse in this position is responsible for providing patient-centered care by assuming various responsibilities and being accountable for the planning, delivery, coordination, and evaluation of patient care. The nurse promotes the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values while integrating their professional abilities.

Job Duties/Performance Expectations:

  1. Obtain a comprehensive admission history and perform physical assessments, distinguishing normal from abnormal findings, analyzing and prioritizing abnormal findings, and initiating appropriate responses.
  2. Continuously assess the patient's psychosocial, physiological, and educational needs, recognizing and documenting subtle changes in their physical and mental status. Integrate diagnostic information into patient assessment and determine learning and discharge needs.
  3. Use assessment data to formulate individualized nursing diagnoses according to departmental policies and procedures.
  4. Develop an individualized plan of care based on standards of care, practice, and hospital/unit policies. Identify and address the patient's physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, learning, and discharge planning needs. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team and participate in ongoing discharge planning.
  5. Modify the plan of care based on ongoing assessments and changes in the patient's status. Re-evaluate goals and priorities, coordinate holistic care, and anticipate and manage changing situations.
  6. Administer prescribed treatments and medications promptly according to hospital policies and procedures.
  7. Guide and provide functional supervision to ancillary staff, ensuring accountability for patient care. Assist and guide peers in making patient care decisions.
  8. Recognize and question unsafe, incorrect, or inadequate orders. Intervene to clarify patient orders as needed.
  9. Utilize opportunities during patient care delivery to teach the patient information necessary for self-care. Recognize patient readiness to learn, develop individualized teaching plans, utilize available teaching materials and support groups, and reinforce teaching done by other healthcare team members.
  10. Evaluate the patient's responses to care and their comprehension of education. Monitor response to interventions and progress towards goals. Evaluate the effectiveness of patient care provided by ancillary nursing personnel.
  11. Document all aspects of the nursing process clearly, concisely, and in a timely manner using appropriate hospital forms or technology and terminology.
  12. Involve the patient and significant others in all aspects of the nursing process. Act as a patient advocate, respect their rights and confidentiality, promote communication, and utilize information and communication systems effectively. Address ethical concerns according to guidelines.
  13. Demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in applying the nursing process. Organize, prioritize, and be accountable for nursing care. Recognize the strengths and limitations of peers, provide appropriate feedback, and seek assistance and take corrective action as needed.
  14. Anticipate and respond appropriately in emergency and complex patient care situations.
  15. Participate in performance improvement activities and incorporate recommendations into patient care delivery.
  16. Understand and adhere to the guidelines and organizational structure defined by the Department of Nursing. Utilize the chain of command and appropriate communication procedures.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and active nursing license are required.
  • Must possess current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or a compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification is required.
