Overall:

Applicants will need to be articulate, able to demonstrate initiative and work as a team player. This is a busy and demanding role and the ability to perform accurately under pressure is essential. You will have excellent I.T. and communication skills, be flexible, have a positive attitude and possess the ability to learn quickly and to adapt to new processes.

You will provide, with all staff, an efficient and effective service to clients and Members of Chambers and in so doing provide an enjoyable and productive working environment.

You will contribute to the development of a highly able, cohesive and supportive clerking and administration team in Chambers.

Key Elements of the role:

Clerking

  • Draft morning task list
  • Take papers to and from courts as directed by Clerks and barristers.
  • Photocopy papers, books and other documents as directed by Clerks and barristers.
  • Collect and deliver papers to and from barristers' rooms.
  • Organise and deliver outbound DX and mail, including operation and replenishment of scales and franking machine in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Comply with Health and Safety guidelines and good practice, especially with regard to carrying and stacking boxes
  • Ensure that you meet clerking standards developed within chambers and keep to written or 'good clerking practice' systems and procedures; contribute to the development of such standards, systems and procedures.
  • Answer telephone calls speedily and courteously in a professional manner. Where required, or where advantageous, welcome visitors to chambers.
  • Ensure that Chambers library is accurately maintained and updated and new books are stamped with Chambers details and recorded on the computer system.
  • Draft daily activity schedule

Administration

  • Regularly check and replenish printer and photocopier paper.
  • Ensure bottled water supplies are regularly checked and replaced when empty. Liaise with water supplier for replenishments.
  • Put stationery deliveries away tidily in the appropriate place (i.e. Clerks Room, basement or other storage area).
  • Purchase sandwich lunches with Petty Cash for Members who are sitting, in court, or in conference.
  • Perform other delivery/purchasing errands within the locality as directed by the SLT (Senior Leadership Team).
  • Assist in rearrangement of conference rooms, organisation of Chambers' functions as directed by the SLT.
  • The list of duties is not exhaustive, and chambers expect all clerks to deal with any other day to day tasks as reasonably requested.

Practice Development

  • Proactively offer assistance to the SLT in the development of barristers' practices.
  • Develop good working relationships with all barristers.

Marketing

  • Take responsibility for your appearance and ensure that you always present yourself in a professional way.
  • Ensure that when dealing with anyone you act in a highly professional manner, remembering that you are representing XXIV Old Buildings at all times.

Team Membership & Contribution

  • Contribute to the whole support team through routine liaison with other members of the clerking team.
  • Cover for the absence of others, by performing whatever reasonable duties requested by barristers, SLT, during temporary absence, holidays and sickness of colleagues.
  • When the Receptionist is absent, or away from their desk, take responsibility for ensuring (by yourself or others) that callers and visitors are treated appropriately using the systems in place.
  • Support the SLT in the development and adherence to quality systems and procedures.
  • Undertake other reasonable tasks as directed by the SLT from time to time.
