Our client is a leading criminal set with a reputation for excellence in advocacy and client service. Their members appear in high-profile cases nationwide, covering all aspects of criminal law, including defence and prosecution work. Chambers are seeking an ambitious and proactive Clerk to join their clerking team and support the effective running of Chambers.
About the Role:
This is a full-time position suited to a motivated and professional individual with 8+ years of relevant clerking experience. You will be responsible for supporting the clerking team in the day-to-day management of barristers' practices, with a focus on diary management, listing, and client care. There will be opportunities for growth and development in a supportive and fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diary Management: Efficient allocation of work, ensuring barristers' availability and avoiding scheduling conflicts.
- Listing & Case Management: Liaising with courts, solicitors, and other stakeholders to confirm listings and manage any changes effectively.
- Client Liaison: Providing a professional first point of contact for instructing solicitors, CPS, and court staff. Ensuring excellent client service at all times.
- Fee Negotiation (Junior Level): Assisting in negotiating and agreeing fees for magistrates' court and early Crown Court work, under supervision.
- Chambers Administration: Supporting administrative tasks, including record-keeping, maintaining case files, and assisting with compliance documentation (e.g., LEXCEL/BSB requirements).
- Marketing & Business Development Support: Assisting with events, seminars, social media updates, and the preparation of barrister CVs and marketing materials.
- Team Support: Working closely with the senior clerk and clerking team to ensure smooth operation and continuous service improvement.
Person Specification:
Required Skills & Experience
- 8 years as a Barristers' Clerk, preferably in a criminal set with some extradition experience.
- Strong understanding of court listings and criminal court procedures.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Professional and confident communication style, both written and verbal.
- High level of discretion and ability to handle confidential information.
- Familiarity with case management and clerking systems (e.g., MLC, LEX, or similar).
- A proactive and flexible attitude, with the ability to work well under pressure.
