Job Openings Cost Controller Civils Project

About the job Cost Controller Civils Project

A major transport infrastructure project (valued at more than $1 billion) is underway across South East Queensland, delivering complex rail, station and civil works. Having won numerous major projects in Queensland in the past 12 months, the head contractor is seeking a Cost Controller - West to provide accurate cost control, forecasting and performance analysis for the western delivery area.

Indigenous Business Growth (IBG) is a majority Indigenous owned recruitment business registered with Supply Nation, specialising in civil engineering, infrastructure, construction and major project recruitment. We partner closely with contractors, engineering consultancies and delivery organisations to place high quality technical professionals. Our approach is relationship led and commercially grounded, built on practical industry experience and a clear understanding of how complex projects are delivered.

Sitting within the project controls team, the Cost Controller is the person area leadership relies on to know exactly where the money is going. Day to day, that means maintaining the cost breakdown structure and cost codes, tracking commitments, purchase orders, accruals and actuals as they land, and turning that data into a reliable monthly forecast to completion. You'll work closely with package managers, engineers, procurement and finance to reconcile quantities and subcontract forecasts, assess the cost impact of changes and variations, and flag emerging cost risk early, then explain the numbers clearly to delivery staff who don't live in spreadsheets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the West area control budget, cost breakdown structure, cost codes and approved changes
  • Track commitments, purchase orders, accruals and actual expenditure against budget
  • Prepare monthly actual, forecast, variance and cash-flow analysis with clear commentary
  • Reconcile quantities, productivity and subcontract forecasts with package teams, procurement and finance
  • Evaluate the cost impact of change orders and variations and support contract administration
  • Track contingency drawdown, risk allowances, trends and emerging cost exposure
  • Support earned value analysis, cost reconciliations and audit trails
  • Produce cost reports and dashboards aligned with project and corporate reporting calendars

What We're Looking For

  • Degree or diploma in quantity surveying, commerce, accounting, finance, engineering, construction management or project controls
  • 4-7 years' cost control experience on contractor-delivered infrastructure, construction, resources or energy projects, including at least one project of $100m+
  • Strong understanding of budgets, cost codes, commitments, accruals, earned value and forecasting
  • Advanced Excel and data-analysis skills, with experience on major-project cost-management or ERP systems
  • Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial delivery staff
  • Strong accuracy, process discipline and communication skills
