ROLE TITLE: Roadworker / General Operative
PURPOSE OF POST:
The role is to work within a professional highway maintenance team, that is required to ensure that the highway network is safe and available 24/7, to the travelling public and business communities travelling throughout South East Wales.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake a range of general highway maintenance works that includes drainage, potholing, fencing, grass cutting and other similar highway works.
The Purpose of this Role:-
The successful applicant will be required to undertake a wide range of general highways duties as indicated within the following list.
To undertake, generally as part of a team, less complex general highway maintenance works including:
*Potholing.
*General drainage maintenance.
*Cleaning and litter picking.
*Work with bituminous materials.
*General fencing.
*Grass cutting.
*Basic masonry and concrete/paving.
*Other similar associated highway work.
*Operate all small plant and tools required to undertake the above duties.
*Carry out basic setting out of work and work to precise levels.
*Work in a safe manner in accordance with H&S legislation and Council policy.
*Operate a wheeled loading shovel.
*Maintain basic work records, undertake basic health & safety assessments, and to record the information electronically if so required.
*To undertake winter maintenance duties and participate in any standby rota arrangements, if so required.
*Duties will involve an element of direction of the work of other operatives.
*Post holders may be required to undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.
Expectation and Outcomes of this Role:-
You will be expected to undertake highway maintenance operations, as instructed by your supervisor, within the specified constraints, quickly and safely, in a manner that ensures the safety of the team, and that of the travelling public, is maintained at all times.

To aid our highways operations team achieve the required levels of service that are specified within the MCC Service Improvement Plan.
To be courteous to all members of the public and ensure that the highway maintenance services provided by us, are efficiently undertaken, and are of a high standard.
To contact the supervisor should any work practice or equipment be considered to be unsafe in any way.
Whenever possible provide the supervisor with any observations that may enable or help an existing work practice to be improved.

Person Specification
How will we know if you are the right person for the role? As the successful candidate you will have demonstrated:-
1. You must be able to carry out heavy physical manual duties, over prolonged period of time.
2. You must be able to work as part of a team.
3. You must be able to work with minimal supervision.
4. You must be able to take instructions.
5. You must be able to operate construction plant, i.e. rollers, breakers, compactors, disc cutters etc.
6. You must be willing to undertake training to expand skills base and heath & safety awareness.
7. You must have a minimum standard of literacy and be able to maintain basic work records.
8. You must be able to deal with staff and the public courteously.
9. You must be able to use personal electronic communication equipment.
10. You must accept the legal responsibilities for health & safety. This includes the wearing of personal protective equipment when required, and working in a safe manner, which will not endanger yourself or others.
11. You must be prepared to wear the sections designated uniform.
12. You must demonstrate some understanding of, and agreement with the principles of Equal Opportunities.
