Role Purpose

We are seeking to appoint an Internal Communications Officer on a full-time basis (for four to six months) to join the Internal Communications Team.

We are looking for a first-class communicator to ensure our 10,000 staff members are informed and involved to help shape the future of our service. The Internal Communications Officer role is instrumental in keeping staff engaged and aware of campaigns and initiatives across the Council.

The post holder will be expected to:

  1. Help deliver a high quality, comprehensive internal communications service across the Council, including all of its sites.
  2. Help deliver our internal communications strategy
  3. Oversee, introduce and stimulate two way and wider communications with and between staff, that can be measured and evaluated.
  4. Work closely with services to create and deliver effective and measurable campaigns.
  5. Innovate and introduce new ways of working to constantly improve our offer.
  6. Be in the office at least 3 days a week and as needed to support events and campaigns/ working from home the rest of the week.

Key responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for managing the content on our internal communication channels, for example plasma screens, our intranet and newsletters. You will also be responsible for delivering campaigns and writing content, working with the Head of Internal Communications and Culture Change.

The post holder is expected to form excellent working relationships with relevant departments to help drive change in the organisation and to ensure all staff share our vision, are informed and have a voice. This will be supported through the post holder planning, delivering and evaluating internal campaigns.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience of delivering internal communications for an organisation
  • Excellent written communication and copy writing skills
  • Experience in working with staff and senior management
  • Strong partnership working skills and the ability to assess complex issues

Knowledge

Knowledge of effective internal communication systems and channels

Knowledge of a communication campaign model

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven working experience in internal communications
  • Proven working experience in public sector communications
  • Degree or equivalent
  • Managing internal communications for a large organisation
  • Excellent written communication and copywriting skills
  • Experience in writing for digital channels
  • Experience in creating, delivering and evaluating campaigns
  • Experience of effective planning of communications work
  • Experience of managing relationships with staff
