Remote | Senior Database Reliability Engineer — $220,000–$260,000/year

We are sharing a specialised full-time opportunity for experienced database and infrastructure engineers with deep expertise in PostgreSQL, AWS RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, high-availability architecture, performance optimisation, and large-scale production databases.

Selected professionals will play a central role in designing, operating, and improving mission-critical PostgreSQL environments within cloud-native infrastructure. The role combines database architecture, query optimisation, disaster recovery, replication, operational automation, and production troubleshooting across high-traffic systems where reliability and performance are critical.

Key Responsibilities

PostgreSQL Architecture & Reliability

• Design and operate highly available, resilient PostgreSQL database architectures
• Build production environments using AWS RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL
• Develop architectures that support reliability, scalability, and fault tolerance
• Apply strong knowledge of PostgreSQL internals when designing database systems
• Support mission-critical workloads requiring consistent availability and operational stability

Performance Optimisation & Query Tuning

• Analyse query execution plans and identify performance bottlenecks
• Tune indexes, queries, and database configuration for improved efficiency
• Design and implement partitioning strategies for large-scale datasets
• Diagnose slow queries and inefficient access patterns
• Improve database performance across high-traffic production workloads

High Availability, Backup & Disaster Recovery

• Design and maintain robust backup, replication, recovery, and failover processes
• Ensure database environments are prepared for disaster-recovery scenarios
• Implement high-availability strategies appropriate for production-scale systems
• Validate recovery procedures and operational resilience
• Reduce risk associated with data loss, service interruption, and infrastructure failure

Production Troubleshooting & Operational Excellence

• Diagnose locks, deadlocks, slow queries, and complex database bottlenecks
• Troubleshoot issues affecting large-scale or high-volume database systems
• Automate routine maintenance and operational database tasks
• Improve monitoring, observability, and operational practices
• Support production incidents while identifying long-term corrective improvements

Platform Collaboration & Scaling

• Collaborate with engineering teams on new product features and platform requirements
• Support data migrations and application scaling initiatives
• Contribute database expertise to architectural and infrastructure decisions
• Help ensure databases evolve safely as system usage and data volumes increase
• Maintain clear technical documentation and communicate proactively with stakeholders

Ideal Profile

• 5+ years of professional experience managing and optimising PostgreSQL databases in production
• Expert-level knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, query tuning, indexing, partitioning, and replication
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL
• Practical experience designing backup, recovery, failover, and high-availability architectures
• Strong ability to troubleshoot execution plans, slow queries, locks, and deadlocks
• Experience operating large-scale, high-traffic databases containing millions of rows or more
• Strong analytical and production-debugging skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within a distributed engineering team
• Experience supporting analytics platforms, ETL workloads, operational databases, or data infrastructure is advantageous
• Familiarity with Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools is beneficial
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native infrastructure is advantageous
• Familiarity with modern monitoring and observability tools is strongly valued

• Compensation: $220,000–$260,000/year
• Work will involve PostgreSQL architecture, AWS RDS and Aurora, performance optimisation, high availability, disaster recovery, and production database reliability
• Strong hands-on experience operating large-scale PostgreSQL environments is central to this role
• Responsibilities will include production troubleshooting, operational automation, data migrations, and infrastructure scaling
• Familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, and modern observability practices is highly relevant
• Technical priorities and platform requirements may evolve as infrastructure and product needs develop
