About the job Remote | Software Developer — Occupational Research Study — Up to $60/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced US software developers with direct knowledge of software design, coding, system architecture, testing, deployment, and the broader development lifecycle.
This short-term occupational research study is designed to improve how the responsibilities and day-to-day work of software developers are documented within a US occupational framework. Selected professionals will complete a one-time online survey or interview based on their current or recent software development experience.
Key Responsibilities
Occupational Survey Participation
- Complete a one-time online survey or interview about day-to-day software development work
- Provide accurate information about common responsibilities, workflows, and technical decisions
- Describe software design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance activities
- Help clarify how software developers contribute across the full development lifecycle
Software Development Workflow Review
- Share insight into requirements analysis, system design, software architecture, and implementation
- Describe how developers assess technical feasibility within time and cost constraints
- Explain approaches to testing, validation, debugging, performance improvement, and software modification
- Provide perspective on integrating software with hardware, networks, or other technical systems where relevant
Role & Task Validation
- Review descriptions of software developer responsibilities for accuracy and completeness
- Identify missing, outdated, or unclear occupational task descriptions
- Help distinguish software development from programming, web development, testing, systems analysis, and IT support
- Contribute practical context grounded in professional ownership of software design and development decisions
Optional Follow-Up Participation
- Participate in an additional survey, task, or short interview when invited
- Provide clarification or further detail on software development responsibilities
- Review follow-up questions related to technical workflows and professional practice
- Receive separate compensation for any optional additional work
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
- At least 4 years of professional experience working specifically as a software developer
- Current work in software development or experience in the role within the past 12 months
- Direct knowledge of software design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance
- Experience analysing user needs and translating requirements into software solutions
- Responsibility for system or application design decisions
- Ability to describe technical tasks clearly and accurately
- Current residence in the United States
Educational Background
- A degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, information technology, or a related discipline may be helpful
- Equivalent professional experience in software development may also be considered
- Technical training involving software architecture, application development, systems design, or programming may strengthen an application
- Professional experience should reflect developer-level responsibility for design and implementation decisions
Nice to Have
- Experience across multiple stages of the software development lifecycle
- Background designing or maintaining software systems beyond website-focused development
- Experience defining specifications, performance requirements, or system architecture
- Familiarity with software testing, validation, deployment, and performance optimisation
- Experience coordinating with hardware, infrastructure, product, or engineering teams
- Familiarity with occupational research, professional surveys, or structured interviews
- Availability for a brief optional follow-up activity

Contract Details

- One-time online survey or interview lasting up to approximately 30 minutes
- Compensation of up to $60 per hour
- Optional follow-up surveys, tasks, or interviews may be offered and paid separately
- Flexible completion schedule
- Software QA analysts, testers, IT support professionals, system administrators, computer programmers, web developers, systems analysts, systems engineers, and IT managers whose primary work falls outside software development are outside the scope of this study
- Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
