About the job Remote | Physics Expert (Condensed Matter / Magnetic Materials) — $80–$160/hour

We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Physics Experts in condensed matter physics and magnetic materials with strong expertise in magnetic structure factors, propagation-vector analysis, magnetic space groups, neutron scattering, BNS notation, AFM/FM phase classification, birefringence, and magneto-optic phenomena.

Selected professionals will contribute to a research-level project focused on magnetic ordering, symmetry, neutron-diffraction interpretation, and the relationship between experimental signatures and underlying magnetic structure. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities

Magnetic Structure & Symmetry Analysis

  • Analyse magnetic structure factors and propagation vectors in ordered magnetic systems
  • Classify antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and related magnetic phases
  • Identify and validate magnetic space groups using symmetry-based reasoning
  • Apply BNS notation and maintain consistency between symmetry descriptions, propagation vectors, and magnetic structures
  • Use references such as MAGNDATA where appropriate

Neutron Scattering & Experimental Interpretation

  • Analyse neutron-diffraction data, magnetic Bragg peaks, and scattering signatures
  • Assess whether experimental observations support proposed magnetic structures
  • Connect scattering features with moment configurations and ordering patterns
  • Compare competing magnetic-structure models for physical and symmetry consistency
  • Identify inconsistencies between theoretical predictions and experimental data

Optical Effects & Research Evaluation

  • Evaluate birefringence and magneto-optic Kerr effect signatures associated with magnetic ordering
  • Relate optical responses to magnetic structure and symmetry
  • Distinguish magnetic from non-magnetic contributions where relevant
  • Review theoretical and experimental analyses for technical accuracy
  • Provide precise, defensible written feedback on magnetic-structure interpretations

Ideal Profile

  • PhD or equivalent research experience in condensed matter physics, magnetism, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in magnetic structure factor calculations and propagation-vector analysis
  • Practical experience with magnetic symmetry, phase identification, and magnetic space groups
  • Strong working knowledge of BNS notation and familiarity with MAGNDATA
  • Experience with neutron scattering or neutron diffraction
  • Strong understanding of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ordering
  • Ability to interpret magnetic-structure data and connect experimental signatures with microscopic models
  • Familiarity with birefringence and magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements is highly valuable
  • Strong analytical and scientific-writing skills
  • No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required

Engagement Details

  • Independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Compensation: $80–$160/hour
  • Work will involve magnetic structure factor calculations, propagation-vector analysis, magnetic space group identification, AFM/FM phase classification, neutron scattering, BNS notation, MAGNDATA, birefringence, and MOKE interpretation
  • Assignments may involve theoretical magnetic structures, neutron-diffraction data, symmetry classifications, optical signatures, and research-level technical evaluation
  • Project scope, workload, material systems, and evaluation standards may evolve depending on project requirements
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, research institution, laboratory, collaborator, or other third party
