About the job Remote | Open Source Contributor (GitHub) — $100–$150/hour
We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced open-source software engineers with strong expertise in repository exploration, debugging, architecture, code review, testing, and multi-language development to contribute to an advanced AI training and software-engineering evaluation project.
Selected professionals will create, solve, review, and validate challenging engineering tasks across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, infrastructure, and developer-tooling environments. The role requires meaningful open-source contributions, the ability to navigate unfamiliar repositories quickly, and strong judgement around correctness, security, maintainability, and architectural fit.
Key Responsibilities
Repository Analysis & Development
- Explore unfamiliar repositories and understand architecture, dependencies, modules, services, and contribution conventions
- Implement and modify functionality across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure components
- Work within established coding and architectural standards
- Review issues, pull requests, and existing implementations before making changes
- Validate behaviour across affected components
Debugging, Architecture & Testing
- Reproduce software issues and trace execution and data flow to identify root causes
- Analyse interactions across APIs, services, libraries, databases, and external dependencies
- Assess architectural fit, maintainability, and downstream impact of proposed changes
- Write or review unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests
- Ensure fixes are robust and do not introduce regressions
Multi-Language & AI Code Evaluation
- Work across multiple programming languages and ecosystems
- Translate implementations between languages where required while preserving intended behaviour
- Review AI-generated patches for correctness, completeness, security, and maintainability
- Identify fragile or unnecessarily complex implementations
- Provide structured technical feedback and recommend stronger approaches
Open-Source Experience & Collaboration
- Discuss specific repositories, pull requests, issues, and code personally authored
- Demonstrate substantive open-source engineering contributions beyond documentation, dependency updates, formatting, or minor corrections
- Explain prior design and implementation decisions clearly
- Collaborate remotely with engineers and project stakeholders
- Document important technical and validation decisions
Ideal Profile
- Public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile
- Meaningful ownership of or contributions to one or more open-source repositories
- Strong software-engineering experience across front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, infrastructure, or another substantial technical area
- Ability to understand and modify unfamiliar codebases
- Strong debugging, repository-navigation, code-review, and testing skills
- Experience with multiple programming languages
- Relevant technologies may include TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, C#, Ruby, PHP, or comparable languages
- Strong understanding of maintainable software architecture
- Ability to evaluate code for correctness, security, and maintainability
- Experience translating implementations between programming languages is valuable
- Candidates should be prepared to discuss specific repositories, issues, pull requests, and code they personally authored
