About the job Remote | Mechanical Engineering Expert — $80–$130/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced mechanical engineers with strong expertise in engineering design, physical modelling, simulation, technical problem-solving, and Python to contribute to an advanced AI training and engineering evaluation project.

Selected professionals will create, solve, review, and validate technically rigorous engineering tasks across structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics domains. The work combines applied mechanical-engineering judgement, computational modelling, Python-based automation, simulation verification, and critical evaluation of engineering solutions. Strong experience with programmatic engineering workflows is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering Analysis & Modelling

  • Solve and validate mechanical-engineering problems involving design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D
  • Translate physical systems and engineering requirements into analytical or computational models
  • Apply appropriate assumptions, model fidelity, and engineering simplifications
  • Evaluate whether modelling choices accurately represent real-world physical behaviour
  • Develop technically sound solutions across structural, thermal, mechanical, and multiphysics applications

Geometry, Meshing & Simulation

  • Create or modify geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, constraints, and solver inputs
  • Perform structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, and related analyses
  • Select and justify loads, boundary conditions, material properties, and simulation parameters
  • Diagnose invalid geometry, poor mesh quality, convergence failures, and incorrect boundary conditions
  • Determine whether simulation outputs are physically realistic and technically valid

Python Automation & Computational Workflows

  • Use Python to automate model preparation, simulations, parameter sweeps, optimisation, post-processing, and verification
  • Develop reproducible workflows using scripts, configuration files, command-line tools, or programmatic APIs
  • Work with scientific Python libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, or comparable tools
  • Integrate Python with CAD, meshing, finite-element, optimisation, or simulation software
  • Build clear and repeatable workflows suitable for technical review and validation

Validation, Design Improvement & AI Evaluation

  • Analyse stress, strain, displacement, temperature, heat flow, deformation, frequency response, safety factors, and other relevant outputs
  • Compare simulation results with hand calculations, experimental data, reference cases, or expected physical behaviour
  • Review AI-generated engineering solutions and identify reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, or violated physical constraints
  • Develop reproducible reference solutions and objective validation checks
  • Iteratively improve designs for performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behaviour, reliability, or manufacturability

Ideal Profile

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Alternatively, a BS in Mechanical Engineering with at least 1–2 years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D
  • Strong understanding of applied mechanics and core mechanical-engineering principles
  • Experience developing analytical, computational, or simulation-based engineering solutions
  • Practical proficiency with Python
  • Experience with at least one mechanical-engineering, geometry, meshing, or simulation tool supporting CLI, scripting, configuration files, or a programmatic API
  • Relevant tools may include CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, CadQuery, OpenSCAD, OpenFOAM, or comparable software
  • Ability to select and justify boundary conditions, loads, material properties, physical assumptions, and model fidelity
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot simulations and distinguish numerical problems from real physical behaviour
  • Ability to explain engineering decisions, limitations, and trade-offs clearly
  • Experience limited exclusively to graphical-user-interface workflows is not sufficient for this engagement
