About the job Remote | Physics Expert PhD (Statistical Physics / Quantum Information / Condensed Matter) — $100–$200/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for PhD-level physicists and advanced researchers with deep expertise in statistical physics, quantum information, or condensed matter theory to contribute to a research-driven AI training and numerical benchmarking project.

Selected professionals will analyse complex theoretical physics problems, develop or critique technically rigorous solutions, and contribute advanced numerical and conceptual expertise across topics including disordered spin systems, duality methods, topological quantum codes, and critical phenomena. The work is fully remote, globally accessible, and designed for experts able to contribute at a high technical level. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities

Statistical Physics & Theoretical Analysis

  • Analyse advanced problems involving replicated random-bond Ising and Ashkin-Teller models
  • Apply expert knowledge to problems involving the Nishimori line and toric-code threshold phenomena
  • Develop technically rigorous explanations and solutions grounded in established theoretical methods
  • Evaluate subtle assumptions, derivations, and physical interpretations within complex model systems
  • Contribute expert judgement on challenging research-level physics problems

Duality, Disorder & Domain-Wall Methods

  • Solve and critique problems involving Kramers-Wannier duality
  • Apply quenched disorder averaging methods in appropriate theoretical settings
  • Work with square-lattice self-duality and related analytical frameworks
  • Analyse domain-wall free energy and its role in phase-transition or critical-behaviour studies
  • Identify conceptual or mathematical errors in proposed solutions and explain appropriate corrections

Numerical Modelling & 4-State Potts Systems

  • Contribute advanced numerical work involving 4-state Potts model simulations
  • Interpret numerical results and assess consistency with theoretical expectations
  • Review computational approaches for correctness, stability, and scientific validity
  • Analyse finite-size, boundary-condition, or scaling effects where relevant
  • Provide clear explanations of numerical findings and their physical significance

Topological Features & Expert Review

  • Analyse noncontractible loop defects and related topological structures
  • Contribute expertise involving topological quantum codes, particularly the toric code
  • Identify and resolve technically complex issues involving topology, disorder, and critical behaviour
  • Participate as a Solver, Auditor, or Adjudicator depending on project needs and individual expertise
  • Provide rigorous technical review and adjudication of advanced physics work

Ideal Profile

  • PhD or equivalent advanced research experience in physics
  • Specialisation in statistical physics, quantum information, condensed matter theory, or a closely related field
  • Direct experience applying Kramers-Wannier duality in research or advanced technical work
  • Strong familiarity with quenched disorder averaging and square-lattice self-duality
  • Demonstrated experience analysing domain-wall free energy
  • Proficiency with numerical simulations involving the 4-state Potts model
  • Familiarity with topological quantum codes, particularly toric-code threshold phenomena
  • Strong ability to reason through advanced theoretical and numerical problems independently
  • Excellent written technical communication skills
  • Ability to critique complex derivations, simulations, and scientific arguments with precision
  • No prior experience in AI training or model evaluation is required

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote and open to candidates worldwide
  • Compensation: $100–$200/hour
  • Expected commitment: approximately 5–10+ hours per week
  • Schedule is fully flexible and can accommodate evenings or weekends where needed
  • Work may involve Solver, Auditor, or Adjudicator assignments depending on expertise and project requirements
  • Projects will focus on advanced theoretical physics, numerical benchmarking, and technical evaluation
  • Workload and assignment structure may vary based on project needs and specialist background
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, research group, or other third party
