About the job Remote | Technical Writing Specialist — $90–$140/hour
We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Technical Writing professionals with strong expertise in developer documentation, API documentation, information architecture, docs-as-code workflows, editing, and technical communication for mixed audiences to contribute to an advanced AI training and documentation evaluation project.
Selected professionals will analyse complex technical source material, create and refine developer and product documentation, improve information architecture, and apply rigorous editorial and documentation standards across varied technical content. The work requires strong analytical judgement, exceptional written precision, and the ability to make complex concepts clear and usable for both technical and non-technical audiences. No prior experience in AI is required.
Key Responsibilities
Developer & Product Documentation
- Analyse and interpret technical source materials including API references, developer guides, release notes, and implementation documentation
- Create clear, accurate, and well-structured developer and product documentation
- Produce guides, tutorials, architecture documents, onboarding materials, and related technical content
- Translate complex systems and technical concepts into accessible documentation
- Adapt documentation depth and terminology to the needs of different audiences
API Documentation & Technical Synthesis
- Review and develop API documentation, integration guidance, and technical reference material
- Synthesise information from multiple technical sources into coherent documentation
- Identify gaps, inconsistencies, ambiguities, or missing context within source materials
- Clarify technical behaviour, workflows, requirements, and implementation details
- Ensure documentation remains technically accurate while avoiding unnecessary complexity
Information Architecture & Documentation Design
- Apply information-architecture principles to improve usability, discoverability, and scalability
- Organise documentation into logical structures that support efficient navigation
- Evaluate hierarchy, taxonomy, sequencing, and cross-referencing across documentation sets
- Design documentation structures that can scale as products and technical systems evolve
- Balance comprehensiveness with clarity and ease of use
Docs-as-Code, Style & Editorial Quality
- Work within docs-as-code environments using tools such as Markdown, Git, and CI/CD workflows
- Apply established style guides and editorial standards consistently
- Follow Microsoft, Google, custom, or comparable technical-writing guidelines where appropriate
- Edit documentation for grammar, terminology, consistency, tone, and structural quality
- Maintain high attention to detail across both technical and editorial dimensions
Documentation Evaluation & Stakeholder Communication
- Evaluate existing documentation for clarity, completeness, accuracy, and usability
- Recommend and implement targeted improvements
- Explain documentation decisions, structural choices, and editorial trade-offs clearly
- Provide written reasoning for changes and recommendations
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to improve documentation quality
Ideal Profile
- Minimum of 3 years of experience producing developer or product documentation
- Strong experience with API documentation, integration guides, onboarding materials, tutorials, release notes, or comparable technical content
- Expertise in technical writing, editing, and information architecture
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong ability to synthesise complex technical information into clear and concise documentation
- Proficiency with docs-as-code workflows involving Markdown, Git, CI/CD, or comparable tools
- Experience applying established style guides such as Microsoft, Google, or custom editorial standards
- Exceptional written English and strong command of grammar, structure, terminology, and technical precision
- Experience owning the structure, quality, or strategy of end-to-end documentation sets is highly valued
- Background with highly regarded organisations or academic institutions is advantageous
- Strong attention to detail and professional editorial judgement
- No prior experience in AI training or model evaluation is required

- Work will involve developer documentation, API documentation, technical content creation, information architecture, editing, and documentation-quality evaluation

- Project scope, workload, documentation types, and evaluation standards may evolve depending on project requirements
