Job Openings Remote | Manufacturing Design Engineer (FreeCAD) — $40–$100/hour

About the job Remote | Manufacturing Design Engineer (FreeCAD) — $40–$100/hour

We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced Manufacturing Design Engineers with strong expertise in FreeCAD, parametric CAD modelling, mechanical design, assembly design, engineering drawings, CAD validation, and design for manufacturing to contribute to an advanced AI training and mechanical-engineering project.

Selected professionals will create, modify, document, and validate production-ready mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD platforms. The work combines detailed 3D modelling, manufacturing-aware design, engineering documentation, and quality assurance. No prior experience in AI is required.

Key Responsibilities

Parametric CAD Modelling

  • Create detailed parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical components
  • Develop and modify assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD software
  • Apply robust constraints, feature structures, and design intent
  • Maintain model stability and editability as requirements evolve
  • Translate written and technical requirements into accurate production-oriented geometry

Mechanical & Assembly Design

  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies for real manufacturing environments
  • Define interfaces, fits, constraints, and assembly relationships
  • Evaluate component interactions across larger mechanical systems
  • Apply practical mechanical-design judgement throughout the modelling process
  • Incorporate reviewer feedback into revised CAD designs

Engineering Drawings & GD&T

  • Produce comprehensive engineering drawings suitable for manufacturing handoff
  • Apply GD&T principles and dimensional controls appropriately
  • Develop tolerance stack-ups where required
  • Ensure drawings accurately reflect model geometry and design intent
  • Maintain clear, consistent, and production-ready drawing documentation

Design for Manufacturing

  • Apply DFM principles throughout component and assembly development
  • Design for processes such as sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection moulding
  • Identify geometry that may create unnecessary manufacturing complexity
  • Evaluate designs against practical manufacturability constraints
  • Refine designs to improve production feasibility while preserving function

CAD Validation & Quality Assurance

  • Perform detailed reviews of CAD models for accuracy and completeness
  • Validate geometry against dimensional and manufacturing requirements
  • Identify modelling errors, inconsistencies, or missing design information
  • Confirm models are suitable for downstream production or engineering use
  • Maintain consistent quality standards across modelling assignments

Technical Documentation & AI Training Support

  • Prepare clear technical documentation and assembly instructions
  • Explain modelling choices, assumptions, and design rationale
  • Create reference materials suitable for AI training workflows
  • Document revisions and validation findings clearly
  • Communicate technical feedback effectively in both written and verbal formats

Ideal Profile

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments
  • Strong expertise in FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD platforms
  • Experience with advanced 3D modelling, assemblies, and engineering drawing generation
  • Practical exposure to sheet metal, CNC machining, plastics, and injection moulding
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Solid understanding of Design for Manufacturing principles
  • Proven ability to create production-grade CAD models
  • Experience validating models against real-world manufacturability requirements
  • Strong mechanical-design and spatial-reasoning skills
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication
  • Strong attention to detail and engineering quality
  • No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required

Engagement Details

  • Independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Compensation: $40–$100/hour
  • Work will involve FreeCAD modelling, mechanical and assembly design, engineering drawings, GD&T, CAD validation, and DFM
  • Strong production-oriented CAD and manufacturing knowledge are central to this engagement
  • Assignments may include part modelling, assembly development, technical drawing creation, manufacturability analysis, and documentation
  • Project scope, workload, modelling complexity, and quality standards may evolve depending on project requirements
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
