About the job Remote | Phylogenetics & Evolutionary Biology Problem Design Consultant — $45–$65/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for professionals experienced in phylogenetics, evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, ecology, and evolution-focused research.

This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on advanced scientific problem design, AI reasoning evaluation, domain-specific research assessment, and high-quality technical content creation. Selected professionals will apply subject-matter expertise to create challenging problems in phylogenetics and related life science domains, review technical content for accuracy and rigor, and provide structured outputs based on detailed project criteria.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Scientific Problem Design

  • Create challenging, domain-specific problems involving phylogenetics, evolutionary biology, genomics, genetics, molecular evolution, or computational biology
  • Develop prompts and scenarios that require advanced scientific reasoning and subject-matter expertise
  • Ensure problems are technically accurate, clearly written, and appropriately difficult for expert-level evaluation
  • Incorporate relevant concepts such as phylogenetic inference, tree interpretation, sequence analysis, evolutionary relationships, comparative genomics, or ecological and evolutionary reasoning

Technical Review & Scientific Reasoning

  • Review scientific problems, explanations, or outputs for correctness, clarity, and technical rigor
  • Identify ambiguous wording, flawed assumptions, incomplete reasoning, unsupported conclusions, or scientific inaccuracies
  • Evaluate whether solutions or reference responses are consistent with accepted scientific methods and domain knowledge
  • Support work involving advanced biology, bioinformatics, computational methods, and evolutionary analysis where relevant

Structured Feedback & Quality Control

  • Provide clear written feedback on problem quality, scientific accuracy, reasoning depth, and clarity
  • Follow detailed task instructions, quality criteria, and project-specific guidelines accurately
  • Apply consistent scientific judgment across assignments
  • Participate in screening, onboarding, calibration, or domain alignment activities when required

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • Advanced expertise in phylogenetics, evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, ecology, or evolution-related research
  • Strong ability to design difficult technical problems that require expert-level scientific reasoning
  • High attention to detail and ability to identify subtle scientific or methodological issues
  • Exceptional written communication skills and ability to explain complex scientific ideas clearly
  • Comfort applying structured rubrics, review criteria, and project guidelines consistently
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous, project-based environment
  • Strong scientific judgment and familiarity with research-level reasoning in life sciences

Educational Background

  • PhD, advanced degree, or equivalent research experience in a relevant scientific field is preferred
  • Relevant fields may include Evolutionary Biology, Phylogenetics, Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, or Ecology and Evolution
  • Academic or professional experience involving phylogenetic analysis, comparative genomics, molecular evolution, sequence analysis, computational biology, or biological data interpretation is highly relevant
  • Research, teaching, scientific writing, peer review, or advanced problem-development experience may be especially valuable

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing advanced scientific questions, graduate-level assessments, research prompts, or technical evaluation tasks
  • Familiarity with phylogenetic tree construction, evolutionary models, molecular markers, sequence alignment, clade interpretation, or statistical methods in evolutionary biology
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools, computational workflows, genomics datasets, or biological data analysis
  • Strong ability to identify edge cases, methodological gaps, unclear assumptions, or incorrect scientific reasoning
  • Experience reviewing scientific writing, research outputs, exam questions, or domain-specific educational materials

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply phylogenetics and evolutionary biology expertise to structured remote project work
  • Contribute to high-quality scientific reasoning evaluation and advanced problem design
  • Use research judgment, technical writing, and domain expertise in a focused scientific review environment
  • Work on flexible assignments aligned with specialised life science expertise
  • Remote structure with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Eligible professionals may be based in approved project locations, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, depending on project needs
  • Part-time commitment depending on project availability, screening, and onboarding status
  • Competitive rates of $45–$65 per hour depending on expertise, research background, domain depth, and project scope
  • A short screening interview or task may be required and may cover domain expertise, scientific reasoning, written communication, and project fit
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
