About the job Remote | Materials Science Expert (Semiconductors & Superconductors) — Up to $75/hour
We are sharing a specialised remote consulting opportunity for experimental scientists and engineers with deep expertise in materials science, including inorganic materials, semiconductor technologies, superconductors, synthesis, characterisation, fabrication, and device physics.
This role supports advanced AI research in materials science and the physical sciences. Selected experts will apply hands-on scientific knowledge to develop and evaluate technical data, assess AI-generated scientific reasoning, and create expert-level problems across materials, devices, and experimental processes.
Key Responsibilities
Materials Synthesis & Experimental Science
- Apply domain expertise across inorganic synthesis, superconducting materials, semiconductor materials, and related experimental workflows
- Contribute knowledge of solid-state, solution-based, solvothermal, sol-gel, and comparable synthesis methods
- Evaluate experimental procedures, material properties, and scientific interpretations
- Identify technically incorrect or incomplete assumptions in materials-science reasoning
- Structure experimental knowledge into clear, scientifically rigorous data
Materials Characterisation
- Analyse and evaluate materials-characterisation workflows and results
- Apply expertise in techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, spectroscopy, and electrical or transport measurements
- Assess whether conclusions are appropriately supported by experimental data
- Identify inconsistencies, methodological limitations, and interpretation errors
- Explain complex characterisation results and scientific reasoning clearly in writing
Semiconductor & Device Engineering
- Apply expertise in semiconductor materials, device physics, fabrication, and advanced packaging
- Evaluate thin-film growth and deposition processes such as MBE, epitaxy, MOCVD, CVD, sputtering, and IBAD
- Assess clean-room fabrication, etching, process integration, and device-development workflows
- Review technical reasoning involving semiconductor structures, materials behaviour, and device performance
- Contribute specialist knowledge across advanced semiconductor manufacturing and packaging processes
Superconducting Materials
- Evaluate scientific reasoning involving superconducting materials, properties, synthesis, and characterisation
- Assess experimental approaches and interpretation of electrical and transport measurements
- Develop challenging technical problems grounded in real superconductivity research
- Identify errors or unsupported conclusions in model-generated scientific analysis
- Apply specialist judgement to materials-performance and experimental-data evaluation
AI Evaluation & Scientific Data Development
- Review and evaluate AI-generated materials-science reasoning for technical accuracy
- Design and solve expert-level problems within relevant areas of specialisation
- Rate and rank model outputs against defined scientific criteria
- Provide clear written explanations supporting evaluation decisions
- Structure experimental procedures, process information, and characterisation results into model-ready data
- Contribute to the development of high-quality scientific training and evaluation datasets
Ideal Profile
- Hands-on experimental experience in one or more areas including inorganic synthesis, superconducting materials, semiconductors, or advanced semiconductor packaging
- Strong background in materials or device characterisation using methods such as XRD, SEM, TEM, spectroscopy, or electrical and transport measurements
- Experience with thin-film growth, deposition, semiconductor fabrication, or clean-room processes is highly valued
- Familiarity with MBE, epitaxy, MOCVD, CVD, sputtering, IBAD, etching, or comparable fabrication techniques is advantageous
- Advanced degree such as a PhD or MS in materials science, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent substantial hands-on experience
- Strong understanding of experimental design, scientific data interpretation, and technical problem-solving
- Ability to communicate complex scientific reasoning clearly and concisely in written English
- Strong attention to technical accuracy and ability to work independently within defined project timelines
Engagement Details
- Long-term, ongoing independent contractor engagement
- Approximately 10–40 hours per week
- Fully remote
- US-based
- Compensation: Up to $75/hour
- Flexible scheduling based on project requirements
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
- Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, laboratory, or other third party
