About the job Remote | Senior Journalist / Writer — $245–$280/hour
We are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for experienced journalists, editors, and professional writers with strong expertise in reporting, editing, copyediting, research, fact-checking, storytelling, and newsroom-quality written communication to contribute to an advanced AI training and editorial evaluation project.
Selected professionals will evaluate AI-generated writing against professional newsroom standards, create high-quality reference work, and provide detailed editorial feedback and rewrites. The work requires exceptional written judgement, strong research and fact-checking instincts, and the ability to assess clarity, accuracy, structure, tone, and style across varied editorial content.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Evaluation & Quality Review
- Evaluate AI-generated writing for clarity, accuracy, tone, structure, and overall editorial quality
- Assess whether content meets professional publication and newsroom standards
- Identify weak framing, unclear reasoning, structural problems, factual concerns, and stylistic inconsistencies
- Distinguish polished writing from content that is superficially fluent but editorially weak
- Apply consistent professional judgement across varied writing assignments
Writing & Reference Content Development
- Write high-quality reference pieces that demonstrate excellent professional output
- Develop clear, engaging, and well-structured content across different editorial scenarios
- Apply strong storytelling, organisation, and audience awareness
- Produce reference work that establishes rigorous quality benchmarks
- Ensure written material is accurate, concise, readable, and appropriately styled
Editing, Copyediting & Rewriting
- Edit and rewrite content to improve clarity, precision, flow, and effectiveness
- Correct issues involving grammar, syntax, terminology, organisation, and style
- Strengthen headlines, leads, transitions, argument structure, and narrative coherence where relevant
- Apply professional copyediting standards and established editorial conventions
- Preserve intended meaning while materially improving writing quality
Research & Fact-Checking
- Evaluate factual claims and identify information requiring verification
- Apply strong research judgement when assessing source quality and evidentiary support
- Identify unsupported statements, inconsistencies, or potentially misleading framing
- Apply rigorous fact-checking principles to editorial content
- Distinguish factual errors from legitimate interpretation, analysis, or stylistic choice
Editorial Feedback & Writing Standards
- Provide detailed, actionable editorial feedback explaining strengths and weaknesses
- Clearly articulate why specific revisions improve an article or written response
- Help define and refine standards for high-quality AI-generated writing
- Apply appropriate style conventions, including AP style where relevant
- Maintain consistent evaluation standards across writing, editing, and review assignments
Ideal Profile
- At least 1 year of professional experience as a journalist, writer, editor, or comparable editorial professional at a reputable publication
- Experience at publications such as WSJ, NYT, Reuters, or comparable organisations is highly valued
- At least part of the relevant professional experience should have been gained within approximately the past 7 years
- Exceptional command of written English
- Strong professional editing and copyediting skills
- Demonstrated experience with research and fact-checking
- Strong storytelling, structural, and editorial judgement
- Familiarity with AP style or comparable professional editorial standards
- Ability to provide detailed and constructive editorial feedback
- Strong attention to accuracy, nuance, language, and presentation
- Undergraduate degree from a highly ranked university is preferred
- Candidates based in English-speaking countries are preferred
Engagement Details
- Independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote
- Compensation: $245–$280/hour
- Work will involve editorial evaluation, professional writing, editing, copyediting, fact-checking, rewriting, and reference-content development
- Strong professional newsroom or publication experience is central to this engagement
- Assignments may include evaluating AI-generated content, developing reference pieces, and providing detailed editorial revisions
- Project scope, workload, editorial requirements, and evaluation standards may evolve depending on project needs
- Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, publication, institution, or other third party
