About the job Remote | Hardware Expert — $50–$100/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced CAD, mechanical-design, and computational-geometry professionals with strong expertise in Python, 3D modelling, engineering drawings, spatial reasoning, and programmatic CAD workflows to contribute to an advanced AI training and technical evaluation project.

Selected professionals will interpret dimensioned engineering schematics, reproduce them as precise 3D solid models, automate geometry creation through Python, and validate resulting models against strict geometric and physical requirements. Despite the role title, this engagement is focused on CAD and mechanical geometry rather than general hardware support or electronics.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Drawing Interpretation

  • Interpret dimensions, constraints, and geometric relationships from technical drawings
  • Translate 2D engineering schematics into accurate 3D mechanical models
  • Identify design intent from dimensioned views and technical annotations
  • Resolve geometric relationships across complex components
  • Maintain high dimensional accuracy throughout modelling workflows

3D CAD & Computational Geometry

  • Decompose complex mechanical components into appropriate geometric features
  • Model curved profiles, sweeps, lofts, fillets, chamfers, and Boolean operations
  • Build valid solid geometry suitable for downstream engineering use
  • Apply strong spatial reasoning when reconstructing parts from limited drawing information
  • Diagnose modelling approaches that produce incorrect or unstable geometry

Python & Programmatic CAD

  • Use Python to generate, automate, or manipulate CAD geometry
  • Develop reproducible modelling workflows using scripts or programmatic CAD libraries
  • Work with tools such as build123d, CadQuery, FreeCAD, OpenCascade, or comparable platforms
  • Integrate computational geometry into clean technical workflows
  • Ensure models can be regenerated consistently from code or scripted inputs

Model Validation & Geometric Verification

  • Export valid, watertight solid models in formats such as STEP
  • Validate dimensions, topology, volume, surface area, and inertia properties
  • Compare generated geometry against expected design requirements
  • Diagnose subtle differences between reference and generated models
  • Confirm that outputs satisfy both geometric and physical constraints

Technical Reproducibility & Quality

  • Produce solutions that work reliably in clean technical environments
  • Document modelling logic and validation steps clearly
  • Troubleshoot invalid geometry, broken solids, or modelling inconsistencies
  • Maintain reproducibility across CAD generation and verification workflows
  • Apply careful quality control to technically demanding geometry tasks

Ideal Profile

  • Strong Python programming ability
  • Hands-on experience with 3D CAD, computational geometry, or mechanical modelling
  • Ability to interpret dimensioned engineering drawings and schematics
  • Strong 3D spatial reasoning and attention to geometric precision
  • Experience validating, debugging, or troubleshooting CAD models
  • Familiarity with tools such as build123d, CadQuery, FreeCAD, OpenCascade, Fusion 360, Onshape, SolidWorks, trimesh, or comparable platforms
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other professional CAD environments is advantageous
  • Ability to work with complex curves, lofts, sweeps, fillets, chamfers, and Boolean geometry
  • Comfortable generating or modifying CAD programmatically
  • Formal education and fixed years of professional experience are not required where relevant skills can be demonstrated
  • Mechanical designers, CAD specialists, engineers, researchers, makers, and independent technical experts may all be suitable
  • Experience limited to general hardware support or electronics is not the focus of this engagement

Engagement Details

  • Part-time independent contractor engagement
  • Fully remote and open to candidates worldwide
  • Compensation: $50–$100/hour
  • Expected commitment: approximately 15 hours per week
  • Schedule is flexible, including the option to work evenings or weekends
  • Compensation is output-based, with payment made for tasks that meet project specifications
  • Minimum submission requirements apply
  • Work will involve CAD modelling, engineering-drawing interpretation, Python-based geometry generation, STEP export, and geometric validation
  • The selection process may include screening questions, an approximately 30-minute AI interview, and hiring-manager review
  • Selected professionals should be prepared to begin their first task within approximately 24–48 hours of completing onboarding
  • Roles are typically filled within approximately 48 hours
  • Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
